Holmdel Eagle Scout Leads Creation of Dodgeball Pit at Freehold YMCA

Troop 331's Connor Lowry guided the project. A look at the project. By Marybeth Lowry

In working towards achieving the Boy Scouts highest rank of Eagle Scout, Connor Lowry of Troop 331 led a series of events culminating in the construction of a Dodgeball Pit at the YMCA in Freehold.   This new Dodgeball Pit will provide another fun sporting activity for the boys and girls who attend summer camp.

In addition to holding a fund raiser to purchase the materials, Connor had to design the structure, plan the construction, document the project timeline, and obtain sponsor, troop and council approval to move forward with the project.

Over a series of 3 weekends, Connor led scouts, scouters, and family members in: raising funds to support the purchase of the construction materials, cutting wood according to his design specifications, boring holes in the ground for 9 posts, and assembling planks for his octagonal pit design.

However well Connor designed and planned the details of the project, none of it would have been possible without the support of his fellow scouts, scouters, and family.  The answer to the call for scout participation was exceptional and several family members joined in on-site to lend support.  During the course of his fundraiser and service project dates, over 40 scouts, scouters, and family members participated!

Connor was a Cub Scout who earned the Arrow Of Light Award, is a member of the Order of the Arrow (scouting’s Honor Society), a member of the Holmdel Townsihp William R. Satz School Student Council, Satz Track Team, National Jr Honor Society, and participates in Holmdel Academic programs including Science Olympiad, KnowledgeMasters, Buhler Space Challenge, and Goetz Academic Bowl.
