Board of Education Chooses New Leaders

For perhaps the first time, two women lead the 9-member board.

At its reorganization meeting Wednesday, the Holmdel Board of Election voted to elect Barbara Garrity as the 2011-2012 President, and member Robin Wetmore as Vice President.

"I’m not positive, but we think it’s the first time women have occupied the two leadership roles simultaneously," said Garrity.

Ray Tai, who has served as President for the past two years, has set a tone that Garrity hopes to continue, she said.

"My aim is to work to live up to the confidence shown in me by my fellow Board members, and to emulate Ray in fostering broad discussion and seeking consensus."

Garrity and Phyllis Pascucci had just won their 3-year term seats back in the election.

New member Victor Desario was sworn in. He will take Michael Collins' place. Collins chose not to seek another term in order to dedicate his time towards pursuing a law degree.
