Student Report from Inside Holmdel High School

In her report to the Board of Education, Senior Niriksha Kannan talks about SAB, Fees, Volleyball and snowy day confusion

Niriksha Kannan is the student representative to the Board of Education. This is her February report to the Board of Education, which she did not get to read out loud due to time constraints.

Student Advisory Board
At our weekly Student Advisory Board Meeting, we spoke about the Constitution which we created and signed this past year. We edited it and made sure that we were keeping up with what it said and made sure that the guidelines in that were also consistent with that of the Student Handbook! Most of the changes we made were only grammatical corrections to ensure that later readers could understand our message.

Pay to Participate
We also discussed at a meeting the reaction to the possible "Pay-to-Participate" program that the Board of Education Budget Committee was thinking about.

Our student board was very divided about this topic, as some felt that we should pay for our extracurricular activities as it shows more dedication, but others said that it would be detrimental to the lively after-school life we have.

Volleyball Tournament
Our school had a very successful Volleyball Tournament today [Feb. 9] in the New Gym, which was a fundraiser that a club had to make money for their cause.

Senior Option
One problem we have noticed in our school is the confusion that has gone along with the addition of Senior Option. With the crazy winter season this year, we have had a couple delayed openings and kids aren't sure when to come in, as first period is not the same length, so classes from there on start later. Many kids came late and some even missed their second period class altogether! Most teachers cleared it up, but it needs to be addressed more publicly!
