Holmdel Ends UCC Shared Service Pact with Hazlet

To save money, Holmdel Township will perform the work using current staff.

Holmdel Township has notified Hazlet Township that it no longer wishes to share  Uniform Construction Code services.

The Township Committee voted to terminate the agreement it entered in 2009 at its meeting on Nov. 17.

"It was a financial decision," said Mayor Patrick Impreveduto. "After research, our business administrator, Andy Katz, said we could save $60,000 - $70,000 if we did the work ourselves," he said. A current Holmdel employee will likely be promoted to assume the duties Hazlet Township's Dennis Pino provided.

Pino had just launched on Nov. 8 a new, efficient online permit system to replace the paper process in use in Hazlet and Holmdel.

By state law, residents must obtain permits for sheds, decks, replacement furnaces, boilers, roofing, siding and more. Contractors or residents can load the information into a customized system. They print it out, sign it and mail it to their town's construction official. The application is reviewed by a technical assistant. Pino said users can choose their own inspection date and see the status of their permit.

"The more we continue to streamline these processes and cut red tape, the more efficient we can do our job and better serve the public," said Pino.

Hazlet Township's construction department is looking to do elevator permits themselves, instead of using state code officials, and will likely seek more municipal partners to share services with, said Pino.
