A notice on the district website by Keansburg Superintendent Jerry North says:

"Dear Keansburg Titans
The Keansburg Titan Family suffered a devastating loss today with the untimely death of fifth grader Drew Keough. There will be grief counseling for both students and parents who want to know what to say to children. This horrific accident strikes at the core of our community. I encourage parents to tell their children to reach out to talk to a counselor if they are upset or confused. Together we can help our children and Drew's family begin the healing process.
Sincerely
Jerry North"

Many people reacted with sadness and prayers to the post, which also appeared on the Keansburg School District Facebook page.

Rip Drew!!! You will be missed terribly by everyone!!! To those who knew him... Keep your heads up and always remember it's not a sign of weakness to talk to anyone!!! Please never hold in what you are feeling....That is why there are teachers, and counselors and most importantly your parents... -- Patti Smock

In just 12 hours, a GoFundMe website campaign created by Alyson Munera to shower the Keough-Cerreta with financial support to "lighten the burden of this tragedy on his family" drew 268 contributions totaling $11,285.

Some of the contributors to the Drew Keough-Cerreta memorial fund left heartfelt messages on the GoFundMe site, like this one.

"Drew was always such a sweet and happy boy who greeted me with a wonderful smile whenever I saw him. Drew and our son Hassan have been friends for years and we all are so saddened. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace Drew." -- Hassan and The Champion Family
