Updated: Behold Holmdel's Sinkholes

Irene's rains washed out supporting ground beneath roadways, leaving ragged gaping holes.

Update Tuesday: The gas main has been turned off at Timberdale, Township Engineer Ed Broberg is working swiftly to get estimates for repair, and the Township Committee has scheduled a Special Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 1 to vote on engineering service awards to get the sinkholes and drainage systems repaired.

In three locations on Holmdel Township roads, the overwhelming water produced by Irene's storm swept away the earthbed beneath and alongside roads, causing the pavement to buckle and break into a jagged wound.

Police and Dept. of Public Works Dept. workers have blocked the sinkholes off with tape and cones. Township engineer Ed Broberg made house calls on Sunday to inspect the ruptures, said Mayor Patrick Impreveduto. "We’re going to fix them as quickly as possible," said the mayor on Monday.

The sinister looking holes are located on Timberdale Dr (off Crawfords Corner Rd.), Brentwood Rd. (in the Old Manor neighborhood) and South Beers Street, at Lois Place.

At Timberdale, the astonishing sight of the jumble of pavement chunks, curb and an exposed gas line pipe is a worry to the neighbors. A representative of the gas company servicing the area was at the site on Monday afternoon and expressed his concern, said Iannetta. But he left.

"There must have been 30 people who have come here to look at it, but nobody has done anything," said Iannetta.
