In Bridgewater: Child Suffers Minor Injuries in Fall From Bleachers

He slipped through the cracks and fell 40 feet, say police.

A five-year-old boy was taken by medevac helicopter Sunday to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after suffering minor injuries when he slipped through the cracks of the bleachers and fell about 40 feet to the ground at the .

According to Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Al Nicaretta, the Pennsylvania boy was watching a game at the high school football field, and was seated on the bleachers about five rows from the top at about 3:48 p.m.

"The boy slipped through and fell through the cracks," Nicaretta said. "He fell about 40 to 50 feet and landed on the concrete slab under the bleachers."

The boy, Nicaretta said, suffered minor injuries, namely lacerations to his face and cuts to his hands.

Nicaretta said the boy was conscious and talking to his mother when he was airlifted to the hospital, and police were told the injuries are not life-threatening. He said he doesn't know if the boy was released yet from the hospital.

"It sounds like he may have been kept overnight," he said.

Nicaretta said that the boy, who he declined to identify, fell straight down through the cracks in the bleachers.

"A lot of bleachers have backings so you don't drop anything, [but these don't]," he said. "I haven't actually heard of this happening before."

"At five, kids are very active, and they want to know how things work," he added, saying he does not know exactly how the boy fell.
