Earth Day at Bayonet Farm. Expect Blue Skies and Ideas for Green Living

Sunday's annual festival is free. Noon to 5 p.m. All welcome.

Mother Nature is expected to offer beautiful weather for tomorrow's Earth Day Festival at Bayonet Farm. The forecast is for a mostly sunny day, with a high near 67, according to the National Weather Service.

This year's May 1 festival will feature folk-rock bands, a petting zoo for children, and information from “green” organizations on how to save energy, money, and the environment.

Surrounded by trees in bloom, fields of flowers, and long peaceful vistas, it's the perfect opportunity to unplug the electronics and commune with Mother Earth. The event is held rain or shine, and the hours are noon to 5 p.m. The event is free (except for the petting zoo) and open to all.

Dominic Rizzo, of Rizzo's Reptile Discovery, will present an interactive "Discover Green" program that includes lizards, snakes, frogs, turtles, insects, with a special guest star, an alligator named “Scooter.”

Rizzo believes the love of wildlife is universal and hands-on participation is the greatest teacher. With knowledge and humor his transmits his passion for preservation and hopes to inspire his audience to preserve wildlife, prevent litter, and think “green.”

Other not-to-miss things to see are a rescued exotic bird show, tours of the historic Harding House, and crafts for children.

Festival goers will be able to view solar flares with a special telescope. The Sierra Club will feature a solar heating display.

Environmental organizations will exhibit ways to "go green" at home including solar heating, recycling, gardening, composting, and more.

There's a nominal fee for the "Farm Friends" Petting Zoo and customary fees will apply for the kitten and cat adoptions available on site.

The Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival is sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) and run entirely by volunteers.  A variety of fresh, homemade sandwiches and baked goods will be on sale.

This year, special Bayonet Farm Earth Day T-shirts are also on sale featuring a graphic of -- you guessed it -- a “green” reptile.
