Powder Puff Football Tonight in Holmdel, But No Bonfire

Game starts at 6 p.m. Bring your boots and umbrellas, could get soggy at Roggy.

The annual Holmdel High School Powder Puff football game will be played Tuesday night at Roggy Field at 6 p.m.-- even if its frigid and rainy. The senior girls take on the junior girls in a competitive game of flag football, and the boys will crack everyone up doing the cheerleaders' half-time show. It's a fun HHS tradition.

But this year there will be no raging bonfire near the tennis courts to gather around afterwards. That part of the tradition has been snuffed out this year.

"The bonfire was canceled three weeks ago due to not having adequate space for a new state-mandated detention basin," said Holmdel Fire Chief John Boyle. With Tuesday night's forecast of heavy rain starting in the early afternoon, it may be needed.

Principal William Loughran said there were no alternative plans for a bonfire. Fortunately, last year's bonfire was captured on video by the school's video reporters and will be immortalized in the 2012-2013 Hornet Report Episode 4

The school's pep rally will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., to psych up everyone up for the annual Homecoming Thanksgiving Day game against Raritan High School on Thursday at 10 a.m.

At the game, the Holmdel Football Association's Pee Wee Football Champions and Junior Pee Wee Cheerleaders, both heading to the National Championships in Florida in December, will be recognized.

An independently-organized Alumni Flag Football Game is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. at Roggy Field.
