  • On the article Police: Drunk Driver Caused Monday's Holmdel Power Outage

There appears to be a bigger problem here than the alcohol itself. This is a father of a young child who is highly intoxicated by the middle of the afternoon on a Monday. He also appears to be the sole care-giver of his child at the time (assuming that no other sober adult was present to prevent him from heading out for a drive). Something has gone horribly wrong in this person's life to allow this to happen. This person/family definitely needs help. While the alcohol clearly made this all happen, there are almost certainly other elements in his life that need to be addressed.

One sad outcome is the indiscriminate destruction of these guns. While some may be current models, others are possibly antiques or otherwise historically significant. Those types of guns are now usually unusable and harmless to begin with. These guns should all be reviewed by firearms experts to determine if any can be saved through historical firearms collections or museums.

So, why do you think a perp would willingly turn in a perfectly good gun? Do you suppose they think "Hey, I can get $250 for my gun! Now I can finally stop being a criminal and become a legitimate law-abiding part of my community!"

This is an excellent way for gun thieves to unload their loot legally courtesy of the taxpayers. All of the guns should be reviewed against reported gun thefts and the people turning in stolen guns should be arrested and charged with their crimes. That would be an excellent way to help reduce gun-related crimes in the area. The stolen guns could then be returned to their rightful owners.

I don't think anyone is under any illusion that these homes will end up being age-restricted. Somerset built homes in the past, billing them as "age-restricted", and subsequently opened them up to the general public, and they will do it again in Holmdel.

While there is a lot of information that is available to the public, I don't think anyone can say it is an "obligation" of the media to provide it to the public. If the information is available to the public then it should be up to the public to seek it out if they deem it necessary. In this case obtaining this information might not be as easy as it seems for the criminals who might want it, but a media "obligation" could break down barriers for them.

Affordable housing would be just fine, so long as the residents are willing to pay property taxes that are equal to the average amount paid by other Holmdel residents. If they pay taxes that are proportionate to their home value the rest of the Holmdel residents will be forced to pay more to make up the shortfall from the affordable housing residents.

As for the schools, the kids need it for more than just education. They are under a huge amount of stress that adults can more easily handle. By getting the kids back in school as soon as possible they will at least have 6 or 7 hours of their normal comfortable lives back each day. Teachers took their jobs because they care for the kids and I'm sure they will all agree that getting them back into the classrooms as soon as possible is critical for their well-being. While some schools are still being used as shelters or have too much damage to open, any school that is fit to open should open as soon as possible.

Price gouging is completely unacceptable at this time. There is also a huge risk for anyone going out right now to do that kind of work. The tree services need to find the right balance with fairness and risk management.

Bob, while the plan includes age-restricted housing, this developer has a clear and proven track record of changing the plans after work has started. They were able to push through approvals on age-restricted housing in Lakewood, only to say later that they couldn't sell them as age-restricted. We should expect Somerset to do the same in Holmdel. Even if they are somehow forced to keep the housing age-restricted, we should expect retirees in town to move in and sell their current homes to new families. Either way, this development will almost certainly bring in more than 100 children to Holmdel.
