ReplyThe Hess station on Rt. 34 in Matawan, just south of the railroad underpass, is now pumping gas tonight (Friday) after getting an 8,000-gallon delivery shortly after 7 pm, according to an attendant I spoike with there. The line is moving fairly well, under the watchful eyes of Matawan police officers. A good last chance to get ahead of rationing.

ReplyJgoodin-- Unfortunately, the power remains out in Matawan and Aberdeen. At the Matawan PD today, they tell me JCP&L continues to tell them just what the rest of us have been hearing-- that power could be out for many of us (I live in Matawan as well) for as long as 7 to 10 days since the first outages. We also hearing that one factor in the extended outages is the fact that the utilities must keep power off in a wider area in order to its crews to work safely on poles and lines in the field.

ReplyJust returned from a drive through Matawan, from the Marlboro border, past the train station and down Rt. 35 through Hazlet. Power is out everywhere, no traffic signals. In Matawan, police have set up free-standing stop signs at key intersections but driving will get progressively more risky as more people get out. The best advice is to stay at home for now.

Robert-- Thanks for the question. The original information about injuries and people in the water came from official sources who were relying upon what later turned out to be a false distress call, as confirmed by the Coast Guard today. They had no reason not to think the distress call was valid and every reason to get the word out to emergency responders along the Bayshore whose assistance would have been needed.

ReplyMs. Garrity-- Just to clarify, you're referring to the Sunday morning effort to help Buhler employees match new car keys to inventory vehicles on their lot? Customers and/or off-road enthusiasts came out to help with that? We'd be happy to have more details on how that was organized, if you would like to post further.

ReplyDue to a technical glitch, we lost the poll for this topic this morning, with the vote standing at 109 for yes to 72 for no. So we're resetting it for further participation. Meanwhile, we see there's a good discussion underway here and we invite further comment as well.
