Longstreet Farm, Holmes-Hendrickson House and Dr Cooke’s Medical Office all play an part in Monmouth County's vibrant history.
Historical sites throughout the county will open their doors on Saturday and Sunday for the fourth annual “Weekend in Old Monmouth.” “The tour includes 45 sites and each illustrates a piece of local history,” Randall Gabrielan, executive director of the Historical Commission, said in a press release issued by the county. Hours for most sites are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Three Holmdel sites will be featured on the tour, including Longstreet Farm, the Holmes-Hendrickson House and Dr. Cooke’s Medical Office. When Hurricane Sandy whipped through Monmouth County, Holmdel and Hazlet residents were left without power, with damaged landlines and with minimal cell phone service. With a winter storm quickly approaching the Bayshore, residents are encouraged to sign up for the emergency notification system in either Holmdel or Hazlet with their home phone, cell phone and email address to help increase their ability to receive vital information. The CodeRED notification system allows emergency personnel and government officials to alert residents about possible dangers through telephone calls and email notifications. By now, most people in Holmdel and Hazlet have noticed that daylight is beginning a little earlier each morning. That means spring and Daylight Saving Time are near. In 2013, the big shift happens on Sunday, March 10. On that date, most of the U.S. will 'spring' clocks forward at 2 a.m., meaning, yes, that you'll lose an hour of sleep. But you'll get an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day. And when does it end? DST will last until November 3, 2013. The change affects all states except Arizona and Hawaii. (See the attached map.) Of course, many people would prefer that Daylight Saving Time become the norm, that time would not shift back to standard time in the fall.
