Hazlet Committee Considering 30-Year Agreement with Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority

The previous agreement spanned 40 years and expired in 2012.

The Hazlet Township Committee will hold a public hearing on an ordinance establishing a 30-year agreement with the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority at their Feb. 19 meeting.  The Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority, often called "The BRSA," is a government agency that handles the raw sewage of eight towns, by transporting, treating and disposing it, and discharging cleaned water into the Raritan Bay. The authority performs this essential service for Union Beach, Holmdel, Keyport, Hazlet, Keansburg, Matawan, Aberdeen and parts of Marlboro. The ordinance, introduced by the committee on Feb. 5, extends the township's sewer service agreement with the BRSA. The agreement was first entered into on June 24, 1971 and expired on June 23, 2012…

The BRSA DOES NOT DISCHARGE into Raritan Bay. The Monmouth County Bayshore Outfall Authority has an outfall pipe that receives BRSA and TOMSA TREATED effluent, and that pipe discharges into the ATLANTIC OCEAN far off Sandy Hook. You and Christina Johnson have perpetuated the falsehood that BRSA discharges into the Raritan Bay. That misinformation has caused unnecessary concerns for the Baykeepers…   more ›

BRSA Takes Down Wind Turbine Construction Crane, Plans to Ask Appellate Court to Reconsider

After the appellate court ruled that the BRSA needs local approval for variances and must take down their construction equipment, the sewerage company is asking them to reconsider

The Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority will ask the NJ Appellate Court to reconsider its recent ruling in favor of the Union Beach Planning Board, according to a report by The Independent. On Aug. 10, the New Jersey Superior Court Appellate Division ruled that the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority must seek site plan approval from the Union Beach Planning Board before finishing construction of their wind turbine. The BRSA is a government agency that handles the raw sewage of eight towns, by transporting, treating and disposing it, and discharging cleaned water into the Raritan Bay. The authority performs this service for Union Beach, Holmdel, Keyport, Hazlet, Keansburg, Matawan, Aberdeen and parts of Marlboro. The authority bills the …

Court Sides with Union Beach on Wind Turbine Appeal

After an injunction was granted to halt construction of the turbine in July, the Union Beach Planning Board has won their appeal against the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority

The New Jersey Superior Court Appellate Division ruled today that the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority must seek site plan approval from the Union Beach Planning Board before finishing construction of their wind turbine. Attorney Stewart Lieberman, who represented the Union Beach Planning Board during the appeal, explained that the case emphasizes that while state approvals are necessary, so are local ones.  "We won. We're very gratified that the court saw things as we suggested they be seen. The decision is important because it shows that just because the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) has issued a permit and approval, it doesn't mean you don't have to get your local land use approvals," Lieberman said.  The proposed …

BRSA Wind Turbine Project Halted by Union Beach Injunction

Delivery of the turbine components was scheduled to begin Monday

The New Jersey Superior Court of Appeals issued an injunction Wednesday on behalf of Union Beach, halting construction of the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority's wind turbine. Conti Group, which has been contracted by the BRSA to build the turbine, must not only stop construction but also begin to demobilize by removing their equipment and their crew, explained BRSA Executive Director Rober Fischer. "Union Beach has filed an application for a restraint to stop the Authority from transporting and building the turbine. We received it yesterday and we're going to abide by it," Fischer said. The turbine has been hotly contested by Union Beach and several bayshore municipalities. The Union Beach Planning Board struck down the BRSA's plans …

Matawan to Allow Wind Turbine Components to Travel Through Borough

The council voted to authorize Mayor Buccellato to sign an agreement with Conti Enterprises

The Matawan Borough Council voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Paul Buccellato to sign an agreement with Conti Enterprises to approve the transportation of wind turbine components through the borough. Conti Enterprises is the company contracted by the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority to build a wind turbine in Union Beach. According to an official email received by the borough in Oct. 2011 from Eric Millard, the project manager at Conti Enterprises, it will take an estimated ten minutes for the seven separate components of the turbine, carried on tractor trailors, to pass through Matawan. A map provided with the email to borough officials indicates that the seven components of the turbine will travel along Freneau Avenue to Main …

Please forgive this correction, but the wind turbine would stand 386-feet tall with blades each the size of a cell tower, or about 120 feet. 260 feet would be the height of the nacelle with the hub. It would be located WAY TOO CLOSE to homes in Union Beach. To get a good idea of what that would mean to the residents here, this is a Channel 7 news story about a town in Massachusetts that welcomed …   more ›

BRSA Wind Turbine Contractor Explains Finalized Route Through Matawan

Three components expected to travel along Route 79 through Matawan

A project manager from Conti Enterprises, the company contracted by the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority (BRSA) to build a wind turbine in Union Beach to offset its energy costs, shed light on the finalized route from Newark to Union Beach at the Matawan Borough Council meeting Monday night. Eric Millard explained that the majority of the components will travel down Route 35, onto Route 36 and into Union Beach. However, due to low train bridges over the highway, now part of the Henry Hudson Trail, three components that make up the tower of the wind turbine will have to travel down County Road Rt. 79 through Marlboro and Matawan.  For Matawan, this means the three components will travel along Freneau Avenue to Main Street, at which …

Wind Turbine Permit Fees, Temporary Storage Costs BRSA $268K More

“Expenses beyond original scope,” said Robert Fischer, executive director of the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority, at meeting Monday.

The Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority (BRSA) approved an additional $268,000 in available funds for unforeseen expenses related to the wind turbine it plans to install on its property in Union Beach. The funds, approved through a change order request at the BRSA's regular action meeting Monday night, are available for distribution over the next five months. The company contracted by the BRSA to complete the transportation and assembly of the turbine, Conti of Edison, was originally alotted $343,000, according to Robert Fischer, the executive director of the BRSA. However, expenses resulting from delay costs, such as storing the turbine in Newark, and permitting costs, such as engineers working to establish the transportation route for …
