The Holmdel and Hazlet area is waking up to a winter wonderland Saturday morning. Yesterday, the roads quickly turned from a slushy mess to slick ice causing accidents on the Garden State Parkway and Route 35. A wintery mix started falling this morning in the Bayshore.
The National Weather Service has upgraded the coastal flood watch to a coastal flood warning, as of Friday morning. This warning is in addition to the winter storm warning and hazardous weather outlook already issued for the Bayshore area. A wintery mix started to fall this morning on the Bayshore and has since turned to rain. The National Weather Service predicts that moderate flooding will be experienced by coastal communities during Friday evening's high tide. Moderate flooding is expected during Saturday morning's high tide. The National Weather Service also predicts that rain and snow will continue to fall before turning into all snow at about 11 p.m. Friday. Suddenly a snowy landscape goes perfectly with the show at the MAC through Jan. 27.
A special exhibit at the Middletown Arts Center coincides perfectly with a day when newly fallen snow transforms the view out of our windows into a stark visual landscape, where pearled lawns are painted with the bluish strokes of leafless trees. An exhibit currently on view through Jan. 27 called "Let It Snow 2013" includes 40 pieces of art created by local community artists. Some of the local scenes are recognizable, and some of the artwork is available for purchase. "We welcome the public into our warm gallery to view the beauty of winter," said MAC Curator Maggie O'Brien. Heavy rain combined with high tide is expected to cause flooding in coastal regions tonight and Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service is predicting that heavy rain combined with high tide will cause moderate flooding in communities along the Raritan Bay tonight and potentially Thursday morning. Wind between 23 and 35 miles per hour with gusts reaching 50 miles per hour are also predicted between 4 p.m. on Wednesday through 1 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. The wind may cause property damage, especially to holiday decorations that are not secured well enough. Branches may also be blown down, the service says, causing scattered power outages in the region. The National Weather Service is calling for snow in our area.
Monmouth County residents could see wintry weather over the next 48 hours, and for the first time since October 2011 it could cover the ground. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued a Winter weather warning for the area, beginning with rain and sleet tonight and very early Saturday morning and quickly turning to snow. One to three inches of snow are expected to accumulate, varying throughout the region. The snow will mix in with rain and sleet and "spread over the region" Saturday morning. But the snow may not last on the ground for very long; the weather service is calling for rising temperatures by Sunday, which will turn snow into rain. Blanket of snow over the town
Holmdel is under a blanket of snow, in parts 14 inches thick, due to the thick, heavy snowfall overnight that fell upon existing snow. Schools were closed. In the Old Manor section of the township, several residents were out with shovels to free the cars in the driveways. A neighbor was helping other with a whirring snow plow. A few children were found sliding on the packed snow. Although traffic was moving on Bethany Road, most people have clearly chosen to stay parked. Freezing rain and slick conditions closes schools
Freezing rain is expected to continue through the morning commute, which is being made more difficult with icy conditions. Holmdel Township schools were closed Tuesday. But Town Hall offices opened on time. Interim business administrator Ray Wilson said no snow-related problems were reported. In the early hours of the morning, the township's Dept. of Public Works crews put down rock salt with spreaders to prevent freezing on road surfaces, said Jeffrey P. Smith, Jr. , the department's superintendent. 9.3 inches recorded in Red Bank, NJ by National Weather Service
The overnight snow storm dumped between 10 to 12 inches on Holmdel but moved north without causing any major emergencies, said Mike Simpson of the township Office of Emergency Management. On the roads at noon, Police Sgt. Eric Hoffman was praising the township road crews. "I just did a spin around the town and the roads are pretty good," he said. Possible Thursday night snowfall is subject of meeting
After a celebratory evening with neighbors following the township reorganization meeting Monday night, Mayor Patrick Impreveduto was back at Town Hall at 9 a.m. Tuesday to talk to department heads about snow.
