Mike Sockol, a member of the Holmdel Board of Education Budget and Finance Committee, talks about the 2012-2013 school budget.
Over the last decade, I’ve had many conversations with friends, neighbors, and residents about Holmdel’s schools, and inevitably two questions surface. What can we do to keep taxes manageable? And probably even more important, what can we do to make sure we spend our money wisely? Our mission as a school district is to provide our children a through and efficient education. We have to continually balance our desire to provide one of the best public educational experiences in the country, while keeping costs at a level this community can afford. Taxes for the average homeowner will rise by $92 under this spending plan.
The Holmdel Board of Education will take a vote on whether to adopt a $51,926,347 million spending plan at its meeting Wednesday night. The nine elected board members will hear public comment before voting. The meeting will be held at the William R. Satz school library at 8 p.m. If adopted by board vote on March 28, the owner of a home assessed at the township's average rate of $617,061 would pay $8,175.44 in school taxes, up $91.94 from 2012. The increase in the tax levy is 1.25%, below the 2% cap mandated by the Gov. Chris Christie. To read more about the proposed budget, see the March 15 story on Holmdel Patch.

Rick, here is a link to a column I wrote last year regarding how we are playing for maintenance and repair projects within the school district, which should help answer your question. If you send me your email address, I can get a more complete list for you. http://holmdel.patch.com/articles/managing-maintenance-in-the-school-district   more ›
