A section of Route 34 in Matawan near Walgreens may soon be zoned for a mixed use development. A public hearing will be held for the proposed ordinance at the council's Oct. 2 meeting.
The Matawan Borough Council is considering an ordinance that would re-zone two pieces of property at the intersection of Route 34 and Broad Street behind Walgreens for a mixed use development. The ordinance was reviewed and prepared over several months by the Unified Planning/Zoning Board. The four page document is specific, governing every detail from permitted commercial uses to how a building constructed on the site should look. Mayor Paul Buccellato explained that the council wants to ensure that a builder creates a mixed use development that is not only intelligently designed but also aesthetically fits in with the character of the borough. "I wanted [the ordinance] very specific so whatever comes before the planning board will have …

Contractors were seen continuing their work in front of Aberdeen Townsquare Shopping Center Thursday afternoon
Pedestrians on Route 34 in Aberdeen will soon have a new half-mile stretch of sidewalk connecting the existing sidewalks near Broad Street in Matawan and near the Dollar Tree in Aberdeen, according to Public Works Director Bob Brady. Construction of the new sidewalk began in early June and the contractor, MNC General Contracting Inc. of Old Bridge, is currently working on the entrance ramps at the Aberdeen Townsquare Shopping Center. The $177,000 project was approved by the council in 2011. It is being partially funded by a $160,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. There will be a public hearing on the ordinance at the council's July 17 meeting
The Aberdeen Township Council recently introduced local legislation rehashing a redevelopment plan concerning over 60 acres of land surrounding the Aberdeen-Matawan NJ Transit Train Station. The History Thirteen years ago Aberdeen adopted a resolution requesting the Township Planning Board to conduct a preliminary investigation into whether or not 59.47 acres of land surrounding the Aberdeen Matawan Train Station were in need of redevelopment. In August of 1999, the planning board adopted a resolution recommending that the land be designated for redevelopment, and a few days later the township council officially voted to make the land a redevelopment area. A developer received approval in 2001 to move forward with building a luxury …

Described as the "pre-preliminary plan", Somerset Developers showed the Aberdeen Planning Board their updated vision for the approximately 51 acre property
Somerset Developers presented their latest design concept for a mixed use community at the location of the old Anchor Glass Factory during the Aberdeen Township Planning Board meeting Wednesday night. The purpose of the presentation was to show Aberdeen their ideas for the property. They described the concept as a "pre-preliminary plan," noting that they still have to meet with township engineers and planners to fine tune the details before seeking approval from the planning board. Raphael Zucker, the president of Somerset Developers, explained that the company was selected by the property owner to represent them in 2004. By 2006, redevelopment plans for the industrial area were extensive and involved creating hundreds of residential units…

The property owner has received all necessary permits and construction has begun
Whispers of a new swim club in Aberdeen have been sweeping through the township after construction began on Lloyd Road near the intersection of Cambridge Drive. According to documents on file with the Aberdeen Township Planning, Zoning and Development office, construction is under way for the Cambridge Club, an outdoor swimming pool facility. According to an Aug. 2008 article in the Independent, the Strathmore Bath and Tennis Club board of trustees sold the property and dissolved the club in 2008 after about 40 years of operation. The property was purchased in 2008 by Frank Ward, of Matawan, according to the Aberdeen Township Planning, Zoning and Development office. The abandoned homes at Lloyd and 34 were leveled, along with the surrounding trees
Suzanne Vreeland and her 8-year-old daughter walked by a recently cleared area of trees and brush next to ShopRite of Aberdeen, shortly before two abandoned houses there were knocked down. They took a peek into the window of one home, catching a glimpse of what life was like before the intersection was heavily developed. Vreeland saw a shelf with old books, an old decorative plate still hanging on the wall and a piece of junk mail with the name Emma Brown on it. "From looking in the windows it seemed like it was in disrepair. It seemed like nobody had been there for a while," Vreeland said. For Vreeland and her daughter, it was a nostalgic and almost sad moment. "It sounded like that Joni Mitchell song, they're paving paradise and putting …

The storefront remains vacant after Dollar Express closed this December
Dollar Express on Main Street in Matawan closed its doors for good shortly after Christmas. Eileen Gendus, a Holmdel resident who owned the dollar store at 147 Main Street for two and a half years, decided to sell the store and pursue another retail venture further south. Prior to the Dollar Express, another dollar store occupied the space for about five years, according to Gendus. Before that, Matawan Drugs was there. She told Patch that she hoped someone would open another dollar store in her location to ensure that products remained available at a low price for local shoppers. However, in mid-February the storefront still remains vacant. What type of business would you like to see here?

I also agree with the comments about main street. That needs to be our major priority. I've lived in this town for 6 years now and it looks worse than ever. It's unacceptable to have one of the highest tax rates in the county and say we can't pay an engineering or architecture firm for a few weeks time to prepare a decent conceptual plan. Regarding the stormwater on the redevelopment site which 2…   more ›
