The project also includes safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) plans to begin a safety improvement and congestion relief project along a 1.25 mile stretch of Route 35 near the Aberdeen and Old Bridge border, according to a press release from the agency. The section of Route 35 between Greenwood Avenue and Prospect Avenue, NJDOT said, experiences regular flooding due to its proximity to Long Neck Creek and Whale Creek. The $15.7 million project will raise the level of Route 35 by as much as four feet, with the highest increases in elevation at the culverts of each creek. Culverts are open drains that allow water to flow under a roadway. The project also includes replacing the drainage pipes with larger culverts to minimize tidal flooding. At the same…

American Properties at Middletown of Iselin will present their project "Heritage at Middletown."
A public hearing is scheduled tonight for a proposed housing project to be situated on 31 acres adjacent to Route 35 South, on both sides of Taylor Lane in Middletown. A portion of the heavily wooded parcel is zoned for multi-family housing. Most of the land is in Middletown, and some of it is in Holmdel Township. The property is owned by Harry Swartz, M.D. and Renee Swartz of Rumson and Joseph Becker, with a postal address in New York. According to documents at the Middletown Planning Office, the proposed use of the land is for 196 market-rate multifamily "stackable townhomes" and 49 affordable multifamily "flat" units, along with a 3,600 square foot clubhouse and a pool for the community. The 196 market rate townhomes are envisioned…

Township elected officials approved an ordinance Monday that will 'turn down the volume' on signage.
The Hazlet Township Committee wants to clean up advertising clutter on State Route 35 and 36 and other commercial spaces. Revisions to the township's sign ordinance were passed by elected officials on Monday night, after consultation with the Hazlet Business Owners Association (HBOA) and the township zoning official. The changes include: a filing fee of $50 for permits, interior signage not to exceed 30 percent; the vertical dimension of signs in the Business Highway Zone are reduced from five feet to four feet; only one sandwich board sign is permitted per registered business, and a new section outlining the usage of grand opening banners, special sales and pennant flags was added. "Some business owners have abused the privilege," said …

Work is scheduled to be completed in January, 2013
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) says completion of the reveamped intersection of Routes 35 and 36 in Eatontown is still scheduled to be completed in January, 2013. There has not been much activity around the site within the last few months, and probably will not be until the third phase of the project begins early this summer, according to NJDOT Spokesman Timothy Greeley. During the third and final construction stage the contractor, DeFino Contracting, will: • Shift Route 35 northbound to the new alignment. • Make improvements to the Route 36 westbound ramp to Route 35 northbound. • Construct a new loop ramp to connect Route 36 eastbound traffic to Route 35 northbound. • Complete final median, sidewalk, surface …

Southbound lanes were closed for one hour during the investigation around 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A four-car accident at Route 35 and Laurel Avenue in Holmdel Tuesday night sent one woman to the hospital and shut down the busy southbound lanes for an hour around 7 p.m. According to Ptl. James Archinaco of the Holmdel Police, a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 57-year old James P. Rosko of Fanwood failed to stop for a red light in the fast lane. Rosko wound up rear-ending a 1997 Hyundai Accent in front of him, driven by 74-year old Columbia Gargiulo of Red Bank. The impact caused a chain reaction. Gargiulo’s vehicle in turn struck a 2006 Nissan Sentra, driven by 24-year old Will Clayton of New York. The Sentra then struck a 2007 Jeep Liberty, driven by 45-year old Kathleen P. Granito of Belford section of Middletown. Gargiulo …

DOT says utility relocation to blame.
Construction at the intersection of Routes 35 and 36 in Eatontown has hit a speed bump. The New Jersey Department of Transportation, which is running the massive project near Monmouth Mall, said this week that work there will take six months longer than originally projected. The project will realign Route 35, reconfigure traffic at its intersection with Route 36 and add sidewalks. According to DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley, the department recently authorized a schedule extension, which will push the project out to January 2013. The DOT reported only minor delays in October due to utility relocation and said its contractor was rearranging the construction schedule to keep the project moving, even as it waited on utility companies to move …
