Dr. Smolanoff, Author and Musician, Dies at 71

An accomplished composer, Michael has over 40 classical works published and played worldwide.

Dr. Michael Louis Smolanoff, 71, of Holmdel, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, with his wife by his side. He will be missed greatly by family and friends alike, particularly for his ability to make what just might have been the best sausage and peppers we will ever eat. Originally from the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle NY, he attended The Julliard School where he received both his Bachelor and Master degrees, and subsequently earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Professor of Music at The Philadelphia Academy of Music from 1968-1971, and was the Assistant Professor of Composition at Rutgers University from 1971-1978. An accomplished composer, Michael has over 40 classical works published and played worldwide. …

Edmund Gill, State Trooper and Holmdel Resident, Dies at 86

Edmund received the Distinguished Service Medal from the governor of New Jersey for his heroic service.

Edmund A. Gill, 86, of Holmdel, N.J., passed away peacefully at home on May 12, surrounded by his loving family. Edmund was born on Feb. 17, 1927, in Kearny, N.J., to Patrick and Mary Gill (nee Carroll). He was a N.J. State Police trooper for 27 years and retired as a lieutenant. Edmund received the Distinguished Service Medal from the governor of New Jersey for his heroic service. He served as a merchant seaman during World War II. Edmund was predeceased by his dear son, Timothy Gill, and is survived by his beloved wife of over 62 years, Josephine E. Gill (nee Friel), and his loving children, Deborah, Patrick, John, along with his grandchildren, Tiffany, Jennifer, Kevin and Casey, and seven great- grandchildren. He will be sadly missed …

World War II Veteran, of Hazlet, Dies at 86

The Hazlet resident served in the Navy during World War II.

Robert Madsen, 86, of Hazlet, passed away, Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel.  Born in Perth Amboy, he resided there before moving to Hazlet.  He worked for Tenneco, Edison, as a technical supervisor, for 30 years, retiring in 1989. Former Bell Labs Employee Philip Daniele Dies at 88

A decorated US Army WWII veteran and a POW in Germany, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Phillip Paul Daniele, 88, died Thursday, May 2. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he had a 34 year career at Bell Labs in Holmdel, where his work with the US Department of Defense and Space Program earned him several patents. A decorated US Army WWII veteran and a POW in Germany, he was awarded the Bronze Star. His family includes his wife of 61 years, Eileen Daniele; son, Phillip Daniele, Jr. of Miami FL; son, John Daniele and his wife, Kathleen of Oviedo FL; grandchildren, Marie Wall, her husband Justin Wall and Thomas Daniele; and his sister, Jenny Monaco. Holmdel Resident Thomas Holz Dies at 68

Holz retired as a production Manager for Loreal Hair Care Company.

Thomas H. Holz, 68, of Holmdel, passed away at home on Sunday, May 5, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Thomas was born on Jan. 17, 1945 in East Orange. He was raised in West Keansburg and in 1965 settled in Holmdel. He retired as a production Manager for Loreal Hair Care Company.  He was predeceased by his father, Max Henry Holz and his brother, Arthur Holz. Thomas is survived by his beloved mother, Elsie A. Kleinhenz Holz and his loving brothers, Philip Holz and his wife Marie of Toms River, Robert Holz and his wife Janet of Neptune; his nephews, Philip Holz Jr. and Bobby Holz; his nieces, Mary Louise Wheat, along with many great nieces and nephews. Former Hazlet Zoning Board Member, Weeblo Leader Dies at 73

He was an Electronics Technician who enjoyed sailing with his family.

John M. Ferrador, 73, of Howell Township passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Elizabeth and lived most of his life in Cranford. John had also lived in Hazlet before moving to Howell Township in 2000. He was an Electronics Technician for over 20 years. During his career, he had been employed by a number of companies including Audio Visual Labs in Atlantic Highlands and EWC Controls in Englishtown. He retired in 2001. John, who enjoyed sailing with his family, was a former member of the Hazlet Township Zoning Board of Adjustment, a former Weeblo Leader for Cub Scout Pack 137 in Hazlet, and a communicant of the Church of St. Veronica. Former St. Benedict's Teacher Cornelia Altier Dies at 81

Cornelia worked at the Trinity School in New Rochelle, St. Benedicts in Holmdel, in the Long Branch School System and volunteered with children in Red Bank.

Cornelia Jane Altier, 81, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Lincroft, Red Bank and Matawan, died peacefully Monday, April 29, 2013, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. Cornelia was born in Queens, NY to Peter and Mabel Buchanan Johnston. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, NY. She then went on to earn her BA in English from the College of New Rochelle. At the age of 68, Cornelia was one of the oldest recipients of a heart transplant. The donated heart continued for 14 years, a courageous journey for science. She enjoyed her family and friends, travel and good food. She was happily employed as a Red Bank YMCA director, an antique business owner, and as a librarian at the Red Bank Public Library. Her favorite job was teaching; …

John B. Scagnelli, 68, beloved husband, father and friend, of Holmdel, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. John was born in New York City and has resided in Holmdel for the past 26 years. Mr. Scagnelli was the former president of the HYAA, a former Holmdel Planning Board Member, and was also a parishioner of St. Catharine's R.C. Church in Holmdel. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Scagnelli; son, John Scagnelli; daughter, Kara Scagnelli; sister, Madeline Poggioli; nieces, Donna, Lisa, and Kerry; nephew, Joseph, and his dog Dante.
