Matawan Considers Rezoning Small Piece of Land on Broad Street

Near Route 34 between Walgreen's and town hall, the land is zoned as industrial

The Matawan Borough Planning and Zoning Board discussed rezoning a piece of property on the southeast corner of Broad Street and Route 34 at their meeting Monday night. The  property, which includes Walgreen's and shares a border with Matawan Municipal Community Center, is currently split into two zones. The area of the property closest to Route 34, where Walgreen's is located, is zoned for Highway Improvement. The property that sits vacant between the municipal building and Walgreen's is zoned for industrial use. This is not the first time that the board has considered rezoning the property. In November 2011, the board heard a presentation based on an August 2011 study from John Maczuga, the vice president and manager of planning for T&M …

Matawan to Create Inventory of Historic Buildings

Mayor Buccellato says this is the first step toward preserving borough's history

A walk through Matawan highlights the historic nature of the over 325-year-old borough. Granite carriage steps still grace the sidewalks, homes from 1700s, 1800s and 1900s still linger and the original train station building still greets vistors. The Matawan Borough Council took a small step toward preserving these historic buildings at their meeting Tuesday night. The council approved a resolution directing the Historic Sites Commission, a volunteer committee, to catalog and inventory of buildings in the borough that are over 100-years-old. The purpose of creating the inventory is to give the borough an understanding of what buildings still stand today and why they are important, according to Mayor Paul Buccellato "I think it's time the …

Co-op Brings Organic Produce to Monmouth County

You've heard of farm to table. How about farm to garage? Find out how your neighbors have been getting their share of organic food.

If you thought Whole Foods was the only way to get fresh, organic produce, then you need to stop by Robin Wallace's garage. Like most suburban garages, Wallace's is home to a collection of strollers, skateboards and power tools. But two mornings a month it's also an organic grocery where Wallace plays host to a pod from the Purple Dragon-Co-op, a Glen Ridge-based company offering organic foods at near wholesale prices. Long before the sun rises on a Wednesday morning, this Oceanport mother of three receives a bulk delivery of fruits and vegetables from Purple Dragon, which she divides into 14 equal shares in very unglamorous reused cardboard boxes and plastic bags. Often there is still some dirt on the lettuce and the fruits lack the …

A Haunting for Halloween in Matawan: Burrowes' Enchanted Castle

Whether you believe or not, it sure is a great ghost story

All old houses go bump in the night. Stairs creak, floorboards moan and drafts blow through aging windows. But do 288-year-old houses whisper sayings like, "Be gone," "Are you the Corn King," or "Your son is dead,"? Typically no, but those are just some claims of paranormal activity experienced at the Burrowes Mansion on Main Street in Matawan, made by paranormal investigators with EVP voice recordings as evidence and by those who have visited the Mansion for other reasons, according to Matawan Historical Society member Al Savolaine. The mansion was built in 1723 by John Bound III, whose family was among some of the original settlers in New Jersey. In the 1800s, John Burrowes moved into the house, which was a mansion during those times …

Main Street in Matawan: A Love Story

Married couple helps boost business on Main Street by starting their own

It is not uncommon for a married couple to start a small business together. It is slightly less common, however, for a married couple to start two separate small businesses, with just one shop sitting between each of theirs. Lee O'Brien, 45, owns Attractive Tattoo at 116 Main Street. His wife, Jennifer, 41, owns My Sister's Closet Consignment at 114 Main Street, which will celebrate it's grand opening soon. Lee grew up in Matawan, and now lives in Morganville with his wife. The couple met through an online dating service and were married on Feb. 13, 2010. Lee worked for A1 Comfort Care Heating & Cooling in Wall Township until about a year and a half ago. Around the time he and Jennifer were married, Lee took another plunge. He finally …

Matawan Passes Resolution Opposing Construction of BRSA's Wind Turbine

They are the fourth bayshore municipality to formally oppose the wind turbine

The Matawan Borough Council joined several other bayshore municipalities by passing a resolution that opposes the construction of a wind turbine in Union Beach at the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority's (BRSA) Wastewater Treatment Facility. According to Resolution 11-09-36, which was passed 7-0 at the council meeting Tuesday night, Matawan Borough, "shares the concerns expressed by the residents and governing body particularly in light of what appears to be at best a limited effort by BRSA to reach out to residents of the Bayshore and a lack of transparency in this matter." The BRSA is a government agency that handles the raw sewage of Union Beach, Holmdel, Keyport, Hazlet, Keansburg, Matawan, Aberdeen and parts of Marlboro, by …

From what I have seen here, there are two very vocal camps here – those opposed to the wind turbine and those opposed to those who are opposed to the wind turbine. Neither is likely to change the opinion of the other and their continued use of invective and innuendo is not likely to sway the opinion of any third party – it has certainly not swayed me. The body of outside study and evidence that I…   more ›

Demoted Police Chief Files Complaint, Requests Reinstatement

Matawan Borough will appoint an attorney Aug. 2 to answer the complaint.

The Matawan Borough Council plans to appoint attorney Matthew Giacobbe next Tuesday to issue their response to a complaint filed with the Superior Court by former police chief James Alston. Alston was demoted from chief to the rank of lieutenant at a special meeting July 11 of the council after an administrative hearing. The Council voted 6-1 for the demotion, along with ten days of unpaid suspension. In a complaint filed July 20, Alston demands that he be reinstated as the Chief of Police, that the disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from his personnel file and all borough documents and that he be awarded attorney fees and any other amount the court sees fit. According to the complaint, on June 17, 2010, Matawan Borough …

Kids Get Crafty at the Hobby Shop

The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen offers many family friendly activities

Whether it's a graphic video game or a robotic dinosaur, toys today tend to require less imagination and even less person-to-person interaction than they used to. It can be difficult to picture a child playing an old fashioned version of Scrabble or Hangman, especially when there's an app for that. The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen is working against that trend one event at a time. Most recently, they began a summer camp that runs twice a week for an hour and a half. Employees Cathy Zavoskas and Christina Schutzer are in charge of the program. Each week, one day is dedicated to an activity and the other is dedicated to a craft. "I thought it would be a nice thing for the kids who aren't going away to camp," said Zavoskas On activity days, …
