A pair of brothers, one a state record-holding former football player at Keyport High School, are facing various drug charges following a two-month investigation by the Narcotics and Gang Investigation Section of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office into their alleged sale of cocaine and heroin from the Bayshore region down to Long Branch, Asbury Park and Neptune, according to Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Updated 4:45 p.m.: Investigators do not suspect foul play in the death of a man discovered at an abandoned factory near the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station, according to Charles Webster, public information officer for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. The body was discovered in the factory the morning of Saturday, Jan. 19, Webster said. An autopsy performed that afternoon concluded that there was no foul play involved in his death. The identity of the man and the cause of death were not available, Webster said. Webster would not confirm whether or not the man was homeless or why he was in the factory. A Monmouth County grand jury indicted Kareem Gary, 32, of Elizabeth and Herman Rozier, 46, of Linden on Dec. 13 on seven charges stemming from the alleged burglary of businesses in Matawan, Aberdeen and Red Bank. The investigation began in Matawan after the July burglary of Wine Nation, where the front glass window was shattered and cash and cigarettes were stolen. As a result of the Wine Nation burglary investigation, Matawan Det. Joseph Lovallo and Det. Steve Sakowski were able to identify one of the suspects and tracked his whereabouts for ten days, Lt. Police say over six pounds of marijuana were seized from a Freneau Avenue home in April.
Four men were indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury Tuesday on charges stemming from a drug bust on Freneau Avenue in Matawan, according to court documents. On April 26, the Matawan Police Department executed a search warrant at a Freneau Avenue home at about 3:30 p.m., Sgt. Thomas Falco told Patch in April. Police seized $10,000 in cash, over six pounds of marijuana, 13 grams of cocaine, five glass smoking pipes, an imitation handgun and a 600,000 volt stun gun from the home, Falco said. Scales and packaging materials used for distribution of narcotics were also found at the home. Police also seized a 1995 Honda Civic. Police say a Cliffwood Beach man removed copper wire from the Wilson Avenue substation during the power outages following Sandy.
A Cliffwood Beach man was arrested Monday on charges that he stole copper wire from the JCP&L substation on Wilson Avenue in Matawan on four separate occasions. Two of the alleged incidents occurred during the power outages following Sandy. Police say that John Wesp, 30, of Raritan Boulevard, entered the substation on Oct. 16, Oct. 25., Nov. 2 and Nov. 4 by cutting a hole in the fence surrounding the property. He allegedly removed over sixty copper stabilizing wires that help ground the electrical poles at the substation, Lt. Ben Smith explained. Each section is estimated to be about eight feet long. Several Route 34 traffic lights are without power as well as over 2,500 JCP&L customers in Matawan and Aberdeen.
Traffic on Route 34 in Matawan and Aberdeen is moving slowly Thursday afternoon after several street lights lost power. According to Matawan Lt. Ben Smith, power lines are down near Gravely Brook Park and JCP&L is on their way to the scene. It's unclear at this time if a transformer blew. Traffic lights at the intersections of Main Street and Route 34, South Atlantic and Route 34, Cambridge Drive and Route 34, and Mill Road and Route 79 are all out, Smith said. Matawan and Aberdeen police officers are stationed at the affected intersections to help keep traffic flowing. Drivers are asked to use caution. Police found several rifles in a Tree Haven I apartment on Ravine Drive Sunday night after a resident barricaded inside surrendered to police without incident.
Several rifles and a handgun were recovered from an apartment on Ravine Drive in Matawan Sunday night after a man barricaded inside of his Tree Haven I home surrendered to police, according to Lt. Ben Smith. At about 6:15 p.m., the Matawan Borough Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call at the Tree Haven I apartment complex. When officers arrived on the scene, they found that a resident of the complex, later identified as James Weirzbicky, was in possession of a gun and had locked himself inside of his apartment, Smith said. Weirzbicky's wife and a child had already exited the apartment when police arrived and there were no hostages in the apartment, Smith said. Bobbing in Lake Lefferts a short way from the dock off of Ravine Drive, is a member of the Matawan Borough Fire Department waiting to be rescued by fellow emergency responders during a water rescue drill on Sept. 23. Two firefighters climb into the department's new red Zodiac, designated as Marine-29-1, and launch into the lake, navigating four buoys on their way to their comrade, who is playing the role of the victim. As they approach, they place the boat into neutral and float the final distance toward the victim. Then the rescuers deploy a brightly colored net, wrap it under and around the victim, and hoist her onto the boat. Matawan Police say they arrested the Howell man with 23 bags of heroin on his person.
Four people were arrested at the Quick Chek on Main Street in Matawan on Sept. 13 after officers observed the group engaging in suspicious activity in a parked car, according to Lt. Ben Smith. When Ptl. Chris Stark approached the group, it became apparent that they were conducting a drug deal, Smith explained. One of the men in the car, identified as Andrew Cabarello, 23, of Howell, was found to have 23 individually packaged bags of heroin in his jeans. Caballero was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance within 500 feet of a park.
