Holmdel BOE Adopts Food Audit System After Marley's Mellow Mood Incident

The district is putting all eyes in the cafeteria.

After a commercialized "mellow" drink made its way into Holmdel schools without approval, the Board of Education is tightening the lock. Marley's Mellow Mood, an anti-energy drink, was discovered in W.R. Satz Middle School on Nov. 30, after the school nurse treated several students for symptoms such as nausea, fatigue. In total, seven students fell ill after consuming the drink. Now, the Board of Education is implementing a stricter check system. While Marley's was never approved by the board, the district and food service provider Chartwells is attempting to make sure nothing else sneaks by. Chartwells food service directors in the district no longer have the ability to purchase food from unapproved vendors. "No food service vendors are …

I wish the BOE would spend this much time scrutinizing the school budget! With our declining enrollment, we should be able to cut spending too.   more ›

Chartwells Tells How Marley's Mellow Mood Was Sold In Holmdel Schools

Nancy Quinn, Regional VP of Chartwells, spoke to the board and the public at a meeting Wednesday at Satz school.

Two Chartwells executives appeared before the Holmdel Board of Education at a public meeting Wednesday night to explain how the sale of a non-approved product -- the anti-energy drink "Marley's Mellow Mood" came to be sold in Holmdel's middle and high school cafeterias.  According to Regional Vice President of Chartwells Nancy Quinn, the company's district manager, Jim Gillespie, made a monthly visit to Holmdel around Oct. 16 or 17th and had learned the onsite food manager had planned to sell Marley's Mellow Mood in the schools. The herbal drink is not approved to be sold in any of Chartwells' locations.  "After being told not to sell the product, the director proceeded with sales at the high school. And on Friday the 30th, the product was…

not only was it sold at the high school - they apparently gave out 'free samples' at the checkout! for Quinn to say "she could not say what the food service manager's motivation to independently order and sell the drink directly against her district manager's orders." is ridiculous. Find out the motivation to not only sell it - but to 'push it' with free samples!!!   more ›

The school district released a statement Monday saying that an investigation is ongoing.

Marley's Mellow Mood drinks were yanked from the cafeteria in Satz and Holmdel High School following action taken by the Holmdel School District and school food vendor Chartwells on Monday. In addition, the on-site manager for Chartwells has been removed from the job pending further investigation, said Nancy Quinn, a regional vice-president for the school's Pennsylvania-based company.  Superintendent Barbara Duncan was not available for interviews on Monday, but through a written statement distributed by her office she said that she first learned of children becoming ill after drinking Marley's Mellow Mood drink on Friday, when contacted by Satz School Principal Arthur Howard.  "We called for an immediate and thorough investigation by …
