Freeholders Curley and DiMaso defeat challengers William Shea and Kevin Lavan; incumbent French best Steinhorn in county clerk bid.
The Monmouth County Republicans will retain a 5-0 majority on the Board of Chosen Freeholders. With 99 percent of districts reporting, Freeholder Director John Curley and Freeholder Serena DiMaso led their Democratic opponents William Shea and Kevin Lavan by over 25,000 votes, according to unofficial results from the Monmouth County Board of Elections. "We are gathered here tonight to make sure that what you have entrusted in us remains and creates the greatest county in the state of New Jersey," Curley said during Monmouth County Republican Committee’s election party at South Gate Manor in Freehold Tuesday night. Freeholder director repeated call for resignations after former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges.
Tuesday's guilty plea from former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham has some calling for more financial accountability from the college's board of trustees. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty on Tuesday before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. According to News 12, Burnham made $216,000 in his position at Brookdale. Freeholder Director John Curley, who became the community college's liaison in January, 2011, said he was the one to call attention to personal spending with college money from Burnham's office. Candidates vying for county offices will not face challenges in the June primary election. The Monmouth County Republican Committee and the Monmouth County Democrats each fielded a single candidate for a three-year, full-term freeholder seat; a one-year unexpired freeholder seat; and a five-year, full-term county clerk seat as of the April 2 primary election filing deadline, according to the Monmouth County Board of Elections.
