When the weather gets cold enough, grab your skates and go!
The Roosevelt Park Family Ice Skating Rink is open through April 1 for ice skating, but it's also open through December 31 from 11 am to 5 pm. A great place for the kids and families to ring in the New Year! The cost is $6 for adults, and for youth up to age 17 and seniors, it's $5. Skate rental is $5; helmets are available for sale and patrons can also have their skates sharpened for $8. Sales tax is included in all the fees. Lessons are available. Ice skating at Holmdel Park with three kids who can barely skate
Right about now, most normal people are praying for a thaw. My husband and I, on the other hand, have been anxiously waiting for a deep freeze -- in hopes of taking the kids pond skating at Holmdel Park. We are not normal. True, it’s been a harsh winter, but it hasn’t really been cold enough. Until now. This past weekend, with temps in the single digits, the pond at Holmdel Park finally had its sign flipped over to read “Skating Conditions Safe.” Jackpot. Granted, our kids have only been to Old Bridge Arena a few times and can barely skate. And, outdoors there’s no wall to cling to or Zamboni to smooth out the ice. And, at a parent/kid ratio of 2:3, (including 5-year-old twins) we are sorely outnumbered. Ignoring all this, we snowsuit up…

What a great article. When I was a kid, my dad took my brother and me to the local lake and we skated the entire perimeter, making sure not to get to close to the headwaters of the feeder stream at one end and the dam at the other.
