Can you spell 'regional finalist'? Hazlet Middle School student Bridget Fahy battled her way into the final six at the Scripps Spelling Bee Regional Finals, according to the Hazlet district website. Over 20,000 students were entered into the spelling competition. Scripps is the nation's largest and longest running educational promotion and is run on a not-for-profit basis with the help of local sponsors.

The ironically-named Hazlet Hurricanes Middle School team wins the Shore Conference, scoring 54 goals in 12 games.
The Hazlet Middle School Boys Soccer team won the Shore Conference Championship with an 11-1 record, and celebrated their win with a pizza party at school Monday. The last time the team won the honor was seven years ago, said Coach Mike Connell. A banner commemorating the Hazlet Hurricanes' win is already on order to be displayed in the gym, thanks to Principal Colleen Rafter and Athletic Director John DeGenito. "It was a great season," said Coach Mike Connell. "We surprised a lot of teams." "For the first half of the season, people underestimated us," he said. At a graduation ceremony today, Hazlet Middle School's 254 eighth graders were applauded for completing the first two-thirds of their public education, and encouraged to excel in high school. The promotion exercises were held at Raritan High School, where parents and friends holding cameras and programs filled nearly every seat in the large auditorium on a misty afternoon. "I want to encourage you to grab hold of opportunities, make new friends, and be involved in high school," said School Board President Stephen Willig, who promised the students would find dedicated teachers and supportive guidance counselors waiting at Raritan High.
