County Official Sentenced to 3 Years in Jail for Accepting a Bribe in Hazlet

Freehold Soil Conservation District employee John Tonon sentenced to three years in prison

A Former Freehold Soil Conservation District employee from Wall was sentenced to three years in prison today for accepting a bribe to expedite construction approvals in Hazlet in 2009, authorities said. John Tonon, 51, of Lakewood Road, was sentenced to three years in prision today by Superior Court Judge Ronald Lee Reisner. Tonon will be eligible for parole after two years, according to a release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Tonon in April pleaded guilty to official misconduct and bribery, both third degree crimes. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Inspector with Freehold Soil Conservation Took Bribe in Hazlet

John Tonon, 51, of Manasquan accepted bribe in exchange for construction approvals.

A county official pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that he accepted a bribe in exchange for expediting the issuance of soil conservation approvals while working in Hazlet, authorities said.  John Tonon, 51, of Manasquan solicited a $700 bribe from a builder during a final walk-through a home under construction,  while serving in his job as a soil conservationist and inspector for the Freehold Soil Conservation District, according to a release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Tonon pleaded guilty to official misconduct and bribery, both third degree crimes. The prosecutor's office will recommend five years in state prison, under a plea agreement. Tonon will be eligible for parole after two years, according to the release. The …
