Marlboro Teen Builds Six-Foot Menorah for Holmdel Township

Ryan Smith is a Holmdel scout and a student at Colts Neck High School.

Holmdel Township now has a new menorah for its holiday display, thanks to Marlboro teen Ryan Smith. Smith, a member of Holmdel Boy Scout Troop 331 and a junior at Colts Neck High School, said he learned last year that the township was in need of a new menorah and decided to make it Eagle Scout project. "I immediately jumped at this opportunity and spoke with Ms. Deborah Dow from Holmdel Recreation to see if this was something that was possible for me to do for my Eagle Scout project," Smith said.  After submitting his plan to his troop committee and the Monmouth council, Smith set out to fundraise by bagging groceries at the Shop Rite of Marlboro. Tenure Charges Against Manalapan Principal Revealed

Jeff Simon's attorney, Stuart Moskovitz, sheds some light on the three tenure charges the district certified on Feb. 27.

By now it is no secret that Manalapan High School Principal was placed on a forced administrative leave in December 2011 with pay by Freehold Regional High School District Superintendent Charles Sampson without knowledge of his wrongdoings. Finally the secret is out, as Simon’s attorney, Stuart Moskovitz, has divulged information about the tenure charges brought against Simon in an exclusive interview with Patch. Hundreds came out to the Board of Education meeting on Monday night when the Board voted to certify the tenure charges filed against Simon, and voted in closed session before hearing public comment on the issue. Kiwanis Hosts Free SAT Assessment

The second annual event is open to area students.

The Kiwanis Club of Marlboro is partnering with Supreme Tutoring of Freehold to sponsor the second, free SAT assessment for students. The event is open to all high school grade levels, and not limited to Marlboro students. Licensed administrators will be present for the four-hour test for students, and while they stress about word analogies, their parents will be next door for their own assessment. The parents workshop features information on other state requirements such as NJASK and ACT tests will be discussed. According to a news release, it is intended to give the parents a better idea of how difficult and stressful the SAT process can be for their children. The test results will give the students a rare opportunity to experience how …

Week in Sports: Teams in Full Swings After Holiday Break

Wrestling teams join other winter sports that have started their 2012 season.

The Patriots, playing for the first time in two and a half weeks, dropped their road game to divisional opponent Wall, 5-3, falling to 1-5 on the season. The Colonials, who were also playing for the first time after an extended break, struggled in their 8-1 loss to the high-flying Purple Roses. Freehold Boro is now 3-4 on the season. The Braves lost their second straight game after earning their first win of the season, this time falling to the Shore Conference's only undefeated team, Rumson-Fair Haven, 9-2. Manalapan now sits at 1-8 in Brad Gardner's first season as the head coach. Despite things slowly climbing, the Mustangs dropped a tight Shore 'D' battle with Point Pleasant Boro, 5-4.
