Hazlet Schools Superintendent: No Danger, No Threat At Raritan High

Superintendent Bragen addresses a rumor about a threat at the district high school.

Hazlet Superintendent Bernard Bragen said Friday morning that a text message by a student threatening to kill others at school has been investigated by school officials and Hazlet Police, and it poses no threat.  "We've investigated a threat, which involved a text message sent between students, and determined there is no merit to the allegation, no cause for concern," he said around 10 a.m., on the morning the state observed a moment of silence for the Newtown, Ct. school shooting victims.  On a Threat Assessment Level from one to five, the administration labeled this threat at one, the lowest level, Bragen said.  The school was never in lockdown, he said. There are two factors concerning the disruption at Raritan HS this past Friday: The first is a male student who has been disruptive and threatening since his earliest days in the district's elementary schools. Hazlet Schools Superintendent: "We Remain Vigilant"

The schools chief began the week by personally checking in with all eight of the district schools.

Hazlet School district's eight buildings were personally visited by Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen and Assistant Superintendant David Roman this morning, on the first day back to classes after the tragic news of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, Ct. that left 20 children and six administrators dead.  "We visited with each administrator, and asked them to go over with their each of their staff the safety protocols -- especially those who grant access to the buildings," Bragen said.   Safety and security of students and staff is of paramount concern, he said -- not just today but every day. Ex-Hazlet Transportation Manager Charged With Stealing $229K From School District

The ex-transportation head for Hazlet and Piscataway School Districts was charged Wednesday with stealing a total of $565,000 from the districts by authorizing payments to fictitious bus companies for services never provided.

A former employee of the Hazlet Township and Piscataway School Districts was arrested yesterday by the state police, and charged with stealing approximately $565,772 from both districts.  According to police, former Transportation Manager/Supervisor Michelle Pumilia, 39, of Union Beach authorized payments to fictitious bus companies for transportation services that were never provided to the districts, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said today. She worked in Hazlet Township School District between July 2005 and August 2008. Pumilia was arrested by NJ State Police detectives yesterday on a complaint-summons charging her with second-degree theft by unlawful taking or disposition.   Her mother, Virginia Lisay, 68, who lives with her in …

Only one Hazlet resident addressed the BOE at the public meeting on the ex-employee theft. In her remarks, she said she was angry and disappointed school officials did not catch the alleged misconduct and expressed concern that the district insurance policy might not cover a claim for an event that occurred several years ago. Raritan High School Wishes 237 Seniors Success in the Future

The Class of 2012 gathers at the athletic fields, for the last time together.

Two hundred and thirty seven seniors received their high school diplomas from Raritan High School in Hazlet today, in a remarkably pleasant day for an outdoor ceremony on the football fields.  Speakers at the event included Jennifer Del Re, the President of the Class of 2012, Valedictorian Amanda Stabile, and Salutatorian Jaclyn Itzkowitz.  In the event program, the names of 111 students who had received scholarships and awards were published. According to the schools, the students earned $7.5 million dollars through college grants, and academic and athletic scholarships. Hazlet's Eighth Graders Are Promoted to High School

The were urged to seek challenges, and take inspiration from the Class of 2012's accomplishments.

At a graduation ceremony today, Hazlet Middle School's 254 eighth graders were applauded for completing the first two-thirds of their public education, and encouraged to excel in high school.  The promotion exercises were held at Raritan High School, where parents and friends holding cameras and programs filled nearly every seat in the large auditorium on a misty afternoon. "I want to encourage you to grab hold of opportunities, make new friends, and be involved in high school," said School Board President Stephen Willig, who promised the students would find dedicated teachers and supportive guidance counselors waiting at Raritan High.
