Hurricane Sandy

Life Nowhere Near Normal on Beach Drive in Cliffwood Beach

Piles of garbage remain infront of homes weeks after storm while residents try to rebuild on the quiet bay-front street.

Update: On Friday, Nov. 30 Aberdeen Township officials reached out to Patch to let the community know that dumpsters would be arriving at Beach Drive. More details here.  Beach Drive is a tight-knit community within the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen Township. It's a neighborhood where everyone smiles and waves and celebrates milestones at each other's backyard barbeques. The quiet street is nestled along the Raritan Bay and offers the waterfront properties a view of Keyport, Union Beach, and even Staten Island on clear days.  Thirty days after Sandy's raging tidal surge caused severe flood damage to the Bayshore, however, life on Beach Drive is still nowhere near normal. Mounds of soggy construction materials, old TVs, photos, …

I think everyone knows that the town has a lot on it's hands. I live a street up from Beach Drive, and I've gotten notices about when debris was supposed to be picked up - but it hasn't been. Not the whole lives of my neighbors that had to be dumped on their curbs, nor any of the tree debris on and down the sides of the roads (some of which is making kids walking home from school have to walk in …   more ›

PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy Sweeps Away Bayshore Businesses, Destroys Houses

Hurricane Sandy barreled through the bayshore, leaving a path of destruction in her wake.

Share your photos and videos by clicking the 'Upload Photos and Videos' button. Wide eyes took in the scene on West Front Street in Keyport Tuesday morning, as bayshore residents crunched over the carnage of their beloved local businesses and marinas. The windows of Ye Cottage Inn were blown out and the building was left barely standing. Keyport Fishery still stood, but only as a flooded shell. Bob's Hot Dogs was crumpled to the ground, and the boats in Pedersen's Marina were toppled over. A little closer to the normally calm Keyport Harbor is a pile of shingles, wood, and historic artifacts where the Keyport Historical Society's Steamboat Museum once stood. The public art project installed last summer, which consisted of large mosaics, …

Aberdeen Introduces Updated Train Station Redevelopment Ordinance

There will be a public hearing on the ordinance at the council's July 17 meeting

The Aberdeen Township Council recently introduced local legislation rehashing a redevelopment plan concerning over 60 acres of land surrounding the Aberdeen-Matawan NJ Transit Train Station. The History Thirteen years ago Aberdeen adopted a resolution requesting the Township Planning Board to conduct a preliminary investigation into whether or not 59.47 acres of land surrounding the Aberdeen Matawan Train Station were in need of redevelopment. In August of 1999, the planning board adopted a resolution recommending that the land be designated for redevelopment, and a few days later the township council officially voted to make the land a redevelopment area. A developer received approval in 2001 to move forward with building a luxury …

Four Monmouth County Residents Indicted on Charges They Sold Stolen Items

The indictment was handed up Wednesday by a Monmouth County Grand Jury

Resident Recalls Aftermath of Double Fatal Accident in Aberdeen

A young woman from South Africa and the Holmdel infant she cared for were both killed in the accident Tuesday morning.

Locals know how to navigate the tricky curves and dip in the road along Church Street, between the Aberdeen Township Municipal Building and Broad Street, Matawan. But for a young South African woman navigating the road in the rain at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, with two young children in the car, the road's twists proved deadly. Jannine Hayes, 23, of Johannesburg was killed, along with a 6-month old Holmdel boy she cared for, when her sedan collided with a 2007 Jeep Commander driven by Frank Giammarino, 30, of Aberdeen. Hayes died as a result of head, chest and abdominal trauma, and the infant Gabriel Bauder died of head trauma. His two-year old brother William Bauder III is in critical condition at the hospital, according to the county …

Kids Get Crafty at the Hobby Shop

The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen offers many family friendly activities

Whether it's a graphic video game or a robotic dinosaur, toys today tend to require less imagination and even less person-to-person interaction than they used to. It can be difficult to picture a child playing an old fashioned version of Scrabble or Hangman, especially when there's an app for that. The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen is working against that trend one event at a time. Most recently, they began a summer camp that runs twice a week for an hour and a half. Employees Cathy Zavoskas and Christina Schutzer are in charge of the program. Each week, one day is dedicated to an activity and the other is dedicated to a craft. "I thought it would be a nice thing for the kids who aren't going away to camp," said Zavoskas On activity days, …
