Editor's Note: This article was originally written for Patch in 2012 and has been brought up again in honor of Memorial Day, 2013. Edmund received the Distinguished Service Medal from the governor of New Jersey for his heroic service.
Edmund A. Gill, 86, of Holmdel, N.J., passed away peacefully at home on May 12, surrounded by his loving family. Edmund was born on Feb. 17, 1927, in Kearny, N.J., to Patrick and Mary Gill (nee Carroll). He was a N.J. State Police trooper for 27 years and retired as a lieutenant. Edmund received the Distinguished Service Medal from the governor of New Jersey for his heroic service. He served as a merchant seaman during World War II. Edmund was predeceased by his dear son, Timothy Gill, and is survived by his beloved wife of over 62 years, Josephine E. Gill (nee Friel), and his loving children, Deborah, Patrick, John, along with his grandchildren, Tiffany, Jennifer, Kevin and Casey, and seven great- grandchildren. He will be sadly missed …

Mother's Day is a time to reflect, appreciate and generally bow down to our mothers.
Today is the day we look back at why we are so thankful for the mothers in our lives. They fed us, changed us, burped us, clothed us, bathed us, disciplined us, hugged us, tolerated us, loved us. My mother, like so many out there, went above and beyond whenever possible. From soccer practice carpools to driving out of state for tournaments, to moving me in and out of college number one and then college number two, followed by two apartments on opposite ends of the state. The former coach, fired for abusive behavior towards his basketball players, was spotted coaching a seventh grade girls basketball league this weekend.
Mike Rice was fired for hurling basketballs at his players and unleashing insulting homophobic rants, but the former Rutgers mens basketball coach was spotted over the weekend coaching a seventh grade girls AAU team in Holmdel. Deadspin.com reported that Rice, who lives in Little Silver, was seen coaching a 12-year-old girls basketball team at Holmdel High School on Saturday night. The article cites tweets by contributor Brian Geltzeiler of hoopscritic.com reporting that Rice was acting "crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids." In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced plans to reintroduce high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the 113th Congress. Lautenberg’s bill, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, would prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. It also would ban ammunition magazines that could be readily converted to accept more than 10 rounds. “In light of yet another horrific shooting tragedy, it is clearer than ever that there is no place in our communities for deadly high-capacity gun magazines and I will keep working to pass my bill to reinstate the ban on them,” Lautenberg said in a statement. “If we don't pass a high-capacity …
