Written by Councilman Lt. Col. Jeff Cantor of Marlboro.
Editor's Note: This article was originally written for Patch in 2012 and has been brought up again in honor of Memorial Day, 2013. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is our National Day of Remembrance for those that have fought so valiantly and died for our country in every war since the Civil War. On this day, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their own lives in defense of our country and her values. This one day, everyone puts aside any petty bickering to come together as Americans to support our War dead. It is so foreign, to so many people, what it means to serve and sacrifice. Just ask a Gold Star family of the meaning of sacrifice. These families have lost loved ones in battle and are proud of …
From the holiday's founding to efforts to end the three-day weekend, learn more about Memorial Day.
Editor's note: Hazlet will hold a Memorial Ceremony at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park. Holmdel will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall. Today, Memorial Day, is one of America’s most solemn observances. We honor the men and women who died serving and defending our country—unlike Veterans Day, the day to honor all veterans. Amid the parades, 21-gun salutes and long weekend trips, how much do you know the holiday? Here are five Memorial Day facts. 1. The sheer carnage of the Civil War, America’s deadliest war, inspired Memorial Day as a way to honor the war dead. The observances originally were called Decoration Day because thankful Americans decorated and cared for soldiers’ graves. “Memorial Day” usage began appearing in 1882, but “…

Mother's Day is a time to reflect, appreciate and generally bow down to our mothers.
Today is the day we look back at why we are so thankful for the mothers in our lives. They fed us, changed us, burped us, clothed us, bathed us, disciplined us, hugged us, tolerated us, loved us. My mother, like so many out there, went above and beyond whenever possible. From soccer practice carpools to driving out of state for tournaments, to moving me in and out of college number one and then college number two, followed by two apartments on opposite ends of the state. Think back to everything your mother has taught you. Did you know how to fold a fitted sheet before she showed you? I didn't. Okay, let's be real, I still don't get it, but mom tries. The strength and unconditional love from my mother was never more apparent to me than …

The article cites tweets by contributor Brian Geltzeiler of hoopscritic.com reporting that Rice was acting "crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids." Geltzeiler posted in a follow up tweet, "Just to clarify. I'm not joking. Mike Rice is actually coaching a 7th grade girls AAU team today and he's still acting like a mad man." An open letter to: President Obama, All the members of Congress, Governor Christie and members of New Jersey Senate and Assembly and to local mayors and council members MY DECENT INTO MADNESS BY WAY OF THE RABBIT HOLE Super Storm Sandy has displaced seven people in my family. We all lived in Seaside Park, New Jersey. We are no different from the thousands of people who are facing what seems like insurmountable obstacles towards rebuilding our homes, our lives and our communities. During the height of the storm our local rescue workers, emergency personal and police were heroic in their efforts to save lives and mitigate damages. The weeks following the storm were also filled with countless stories of families, neighbors, friends and …

We need new ideas. What are yours?
In the wake of the tragedy that took the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, a blogger from across the country was arguably the first to break through the noise and galvanize a debate around mental health. Liza Long’s blog post about raising a mentally ill child, “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother,” talks about her experiences raising her 13-year-old son, whom she describes as a gifted but unpredictable child who has threatened to kill her and himself. As she put it, “I love my son. But he terrifies me." Her blog post quickly went viral, got picked up by the The Huffington Post and others, earned a million likes on Facebook, and led to Long's appearance on CNN to talk about the way mental illness…

In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced plans to reintroduce high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the 113th Congress. Lautenberg’s bill, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, would prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. It also would ban ammunition magazines that could be readily converted to accept more than 10 rounds. “In light of yet another horrific shooting tragedy, it is clearer than ever that there is no place in our communities for deadly high-capacity gun magazines and I will keep working to pass my bill to reinstate the ban on them,” Lautenberg said in a statement. “If we don't pass a high-capacity …
