Ride Your Bike From Sandy Hook All the Way to Cape May

It is now possible to travel from Sandy Hook to Cape May on two wheels, no gas, no tolls. Beautiful scenery and health benefits included.

If you've got the will, there is now a way.

It is now possible to bike all the way from from Sandy Hook to Cape May on a mapped route approved by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The state is promoting the Jersey Shore route to promote recreation along the shore as towns and businesses bounce back from Hurricane Sandy.

There are four segments in the route: Cape May to Somers Point (42 miles), Somers Point to Tuckerton (45 miles), Tuckerton to Brick (45 miles) and Brick to Sandy Hook (36 miles).

“The Jersey Shore is open for business and we hope these maps and tour routes help residents and visitors discover the wonderful bicycling opportunities that exist,” Acting NJDOT Commissioner Joe Bertoni said in a press release. “Bicycling continues to grow as a form of recreation, physical fitness and as an alternate travel model for commuters.”

The four new tour guides are in addition to the 20 diverse regional guides and feature rides for cyclists of all ages and levels. Cyclists can use their smart phones to view the touring guide cue sheets, and track their route progress in real time. Traditional maps are available to be downloaded and printed from the NJDOT website.

“The Guides have information on nearby attractions and clickable links for more detail,” said NJDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Debbie Kingsland, in a statement. “The best part of these new guides, are that you can ride as much or as little of the segments as you wish. The main thing is to get out, ride and Explore the Jersey Shore.”

NJDOT also publishes two long-distance bicycle tour guides, the 238-mile High Point to Cape May Bike Route and the East Coast Greenway Multi-use Trail Guide.
