Holmdel Boy Scouts Beautify Village School Grounds

Part of the Boy Scouts of America Adopt A School program. Written by Cub Masters Sean Dowd, Pack 331, and John Guaragno, Pack 131.

Holmdel Cub Scout Packs 131 and 331 chose a gorgeous, sunny October afternoon to brighten up the already beautiful gardens in and around Village School.

Jane Zysk, Committee Chair of Pack 131, discussed our "BSA Adopt-A-School" program with Village School principal, Brian Schillaci and was given the go-ahead to bring the boys in on Saturday to do some weeding and planting in the courtyard and front entrance areas of the building.

After viewing the gardens, Principal Schillaci said, “It is a pleasure working with outside organizations to help benefit our school.  The Cub Scouts’ efforts have helped to make Village School a more beautiful place for all of our children and families to enjoy.”

Village School is the official sponsor of Pack 331 and has been for over 45 years, so having the boys beautify the grounds helps to solidify the relationship and show the boys the value of providing service for the community, and for the building where they have held their meetings.

The scouts and parents who showed up on Saturday planted flowers, watered, did some weeding, and helped to dispose of any trash and debris floating around the two gardens. Going forward, our Packs are hoping to create some additional hands-on projects for the scouts which will benefit both the school and the boys' sense of their significance in the community.
