More than $25,000 is contributed to Bayshore at annual fundraiser, held Thursday.

They say a glass of wine is good for your heart.

More than 125 people heeded the doctor's advice and sipped a good wine on Sept. 8 at a gala wine tasting fundraiser to benefit cardiac services at Bayshore Community Hospital.

The event was held at the sumptuous Addison Park in Aberdeen, beneath enormous crystal chandeliers and wedding cake ceilings. The supporters chatted while sampling a huge variety of reds, whites and sparkling wines, hors d'ouevres and desserts, all for a good cause.

Bayshore Foundation President Wendell Smith welcomed guests and introduced the hospital's management.

"As we begin to regionalize Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, Bayshore Hosptial Center will be the focus of cardiology services going forward," Bayshore Executive Director Anthony V. Cava told the guests. "We are so excited and pleased to begin that endeavor. We have one cath lab now, and our plans to replace that one, put a second one in, enlarge it, do almost everything except open heart surgery."

"What a difference a year makes," said Riverview Medical Center CEO Timothy J. Hogan. He described the first days of the merger, a little more than a year ago, as "an anxious and challenging time."

"A year later and I really am awed," said Hogan. He complimented the medical staff, employees, Foundation, and supporters and thanked them.

The Foundation raised funds through ticket sales and an extensive gift auction. The baskets were donated by merchants and supporters.

The wines were donated by the Scaduto and Azzolina families of Spirits Unlimited and Food Circus Foodtown.
