HOLMDEL GIRLS SOCCER WINS OPENER 1-0 IN OVERTIME

In an exciting start to the 2013 season, the Holmdel Girls Varsity Soccer team beat Ocean at home 1-0 in overtime.  The game's only goal was scored by sophomore Gabriella Bair who hooked a beautiful shot to the far post from the 30 yard line to score with 8:28 remaining in the second 10 minutes of overtime.  Overtime is "golden goal" and  the game ended on Bair's goal.

Holmdel out possessed Ocean for most of the game behind the strong play of forwards Jessica Moskal, senior, and sophomores Hannah Lee and Gabriella Bair.

Junior goal keeper Helen Burleigh had her first shut out of the year.  Burleigh had a great diving save in the second half robbing Ocean of its best scoring opportunity of the game.  Credit center back Casey Matthjis with a strong performance all game and with the presence to get the rebound from Burleigh's save and send the ball sailing far from the backfield.

Holmdel fields a team heavy with seniors and that experience should serve them well this year.  There are 14 seniors on the varsity squad and 7 of them are expected to start.

Tonight's win was a non-divisional win.  Holmdel's next game will be at home against Raritan High School at 5:30 pm on Wednesday.  That will be a divisional game.  Holmdel plays in the A Central division.  Joining Holmdel and Raritan are Rumson- Fair Haven, Monmouth Regional, Red Bank Regional, Red Bank Catholic and Saint John Vianney.
