Aloha! from Hazlet Recreation

A Hawaiian Beach party in exotic Veterans' Park, Hazlet. Written by Camp Co-Director Josh Young

Hazlet Recreation Summer Camp’s second “Theme Thursday” was held Thursday. Campers and counselors dressed for a Hawaiian Beach Party. Campers came to camp wearing Hawaiian shirts, leis, sunglasses, bathing suits, and grass skirts. Counselors participated too; they were even given leis in the morning with the Hawaiian translations of their names. Veterans Park, home of the camp, was also decorated to reflect the theme.

Early into the camp day, everyone gathered by the picnic tables for counselor limbo. With beach party music playing in the background, the counselors competed for the title of camp limbo champion. Campers cheered for their favorite counselors throughout the game. After several rounds of competition, a tie was declared – counselors J’na Jefferson, 18, and Catie Christopher, 19, were named co-winners.

The celebrations continued after limbo. Camp directors Jamie Aitkens and Josh Young traveled around the campgrounds with a jar of 356 seashells. For this game, campers guessed the number of shells in the container; whoever came closest to the correct number would win. Ultimately, four campers tied as they all guessed that there were 350 shells in the jar. Each of these campers will receive a prize next week.

This was not the only prize that was to be awarded. Prior to Thursday, groups were told that whichever one had the highest percentage of campers that dressed up would receive a prize. To the pleasant surprise of many, nine groups had one hundred percent participation.

Next week’s “Theme Thursday” is Hippie Day. Campers will again dress up and engage in a series of fun and exciting activities related to the theme.
