A New York Giant Visits Holmdel

Roman Oben stops by the Recreation Camp to talk fitness, fun, and flag football.

It wasn't your typical Friday pool day at Holmdel Recreation Camp last week. The children and staff got a visit from former NFL player Roman Oben, on hand to talk about the importance of physical fitness and sports safety. He led both campers and staff in stretching exercises and running drills, then finished the day with signing autographs.

He was also promoting an upcoming flag football program starting in September for children ages 5-13, sponsored by Holmdel's Recreation Department and Oben Flag Football, (see attached flier).

Oben was a starting left tackle in the NFL for over 90% of the games he played. Over his career, he played for the Giants, Browns, Chargers, and the Super Bowl XXXVII Buccaneers.

Since 2003, Oben has run instructional football camps around the country. He's an adjunct professor in sports administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University and has testified in Congressional hearings on safety in youth sports.

"The campers were thrilled to see a NFL player from the New Yorks Giants here in Holmdel," said Recreation coordinator Deborah Dow.  "They just couldn’t stop taking about it."

"Some counselors and campers even got to hold his NFL Super bowl ring, including me!" she said.
