Holmdel Cross Country Varsity Takes Group II Championship

The Holmdel Cross Country Varsity team stormed to the finish line to take first place in the Group II Championship on Saturday at Holmdel Park. 

Going into the race Holmdel was ranked 6th in the state.  Led by Travis Fodor, Jack Baisley, and Jason McMullen the team beat second place, Wallkill Valley, by 21 points. Andrew Tsai, Dan Barlev, Eric Williams and Nick DeMaio contributed to the team victory. 

Running in a field of over 140 contestants the Holmdel team settled into the top group early on and maintained good position throughout the race. 

Travis (16:40) placed ninth individually, Jack (16:51) ran a personal best for the race, and Jason (17:16) ran through a knee injury to place third for the team. 

The Holmdel runners ran a team average of 5.29 per mile for the scoring runners (XC takes the 5 best times for the team). 

Sean McCafferty, Head Coach, is to be congratulated on getting the team ready for the victory.  The Group II Championship is the first for the Varsity team since 2001 and is the 4th Group II win since the school opened in the early 1970’s.

The win qualifies Holmdel to compete in the Meet of Champions to be run next Saturday, November 19th, at Holmdel Park.  The boys’ race will be at 11:45AM.
