Holmdel Boys Sweep County Tennis Championship For 1st Time

The tennis team is coached by Chuck Chelednik, who on March 25, 2012, was inducted into the NJSCA Hall of Fame for coaching Holmdel Boys and Girls Tennis.

The Holmdel Boys Tennis Team swept all categories at the Monmouth County Championships Tennis Tournament held this weekend at in Middletown.

The Holmdel boys put on an amazing display of tennis at all levels, winning their final matches in all three singles and all three doubles events.

In order to get to the finals, each Holmdel player had to win their matches in Round of 16, Quarterfinals and Semifinals against all the teams that participated from around the county.

In the finals, which started at 10:00 Sunday:

Derick Liu won at first singles. Derick upset the number one seed Maclane Smoke from Manasquan.

Freshman Michael Chen won at second singles.

Daway Chou-Ren won at third singles. Daway fought off his opponent’s match point to come from behind in a 3-set semifinal match to win a tiebreaker to advance to the finals.

Michael Li and Ganesh Natarajan won at first doubles.

Sam Joynson and Daniel Tu won the first set 6-0, but when CBA pushed the second set to a 6-6 tie, Joynson and Tu came back strong by winning the second set tiebreaker 7-0.

Ray Wang and Ken Hua won at third doubles, over Holmdel’s Ethan Wong and David Lin.
