Holmdel Students Excited For Special Olympics Conference

HHS students Lindsey Conlan and Erin Meyer will head to North Carolina later this month.

Two Holmdel students will head to the Special Olympics of North America Conference in Charlotte, N.C. later this month to learn team building skills.

Lindsey Conlan, 17, and Erin Meyer, 16, are both members of Holmdel High School’s (HHS) Best Buddies Chapter, a club encouraging inclusion and acceptance of individuals of all different kinds of abilities.

The knowledge Conlan, a rising senior, and Meyer, a rising junior take away from the conference will help them in the weeks and months ahead as Special Olympic New Jersey prepares to host the 2014 USA Summer Games in the state next year.

But preparation and focus is old hat for Conlan, president of HHS Best Buddies, and Meyer: this past April the club organized the school’s first DisAbilities Awareness Day. The event featured stations where students could learn about how those with disabilities experience the world. Members of Best Buddies also helped with the first Holmdel Special Olympics Sports Expo last month, which drew students from Holmdel, Colts Neck, Keansburg, Middletown and Upper Freehold school districts.

Wish Lindsey and Erin good luck on their summer adventure in the comments below.
