13th Annual Interdisciplinary Forum on the Vietnam Era

On Friday, Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation will host its 13th Annual Interdisciplinary Forum on the Vietnam Era at the Robert B. Meyner Reception Center located at exit 116 off the Garden State Parkway.

This year’s professional development workshop entitled, “Unrest in the Garden State: Student Activism During the Vietnam Era,” will focus on student activism during the Vietnam era. The Forum includes three panel discussions. Attendees will hear accounts from students who fought for racial equality, those who protested for gender equality and women’s rights in New Jersey, and comparisons of students supporting soldiers serving in Vietnam and those who protested for the withdrawal of troops.

Local New Jersey experts and panelists with firsthand experience in Vietnam will lend their expertise to the workshop. This year’s keynote speaker is Howard Green, a New Jersey historian. After a long career at the New Jersey Historical Commission as its research director, Green started the consulting firm “Public History Partners” in 2005. Green’s book, “Worlds That Make New Jersey History,” is used in high school and college courses throughout New Jersey.

“This is one of our most interesting events of the year because it focuses not only on the Vietnam War itself and the veterans, but the cultural dynamic of New Jersey and the United States during this time period,” said Bill Linderman, executive director of the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation.

The Forum is open to the general public but is designed with educators in mind, offering panel sessions with ideas and information for bringing the lessons and legacies of the Vietnam era to life in the classroom. The Foundation is a registered New Jersey Professional Development Provider with the New Jersey Department of Education and teachers can receive five hours toward their professional development requirement if they attend all three sessions. Pre-registration is required and includes breakfast, lunch and a tour of the Memorial with a Vietnam veteran.
