Board of Education Votes to Expel Student

Action taken at Feb. 9 meeting

In an rare move, the Holmdel Board of Education voted to expel a district school student at its meeting Wednesday. 

The vote was unanimous, with Board Member Michael Sockol abstaining, stating that he was not present for discussion of the matter during closed door session.

No comments were made, and the name of the student, or the student's grade level, was not made available.

According to data reported to the state since 2007, Holmdel High School has not expelled any students from the district in recent years. In the state of New Jersey, there were 90 expulsions in the 2009-2010 school year, up sharply from 35 the year before.

Regarding suspensions, Holmdel High School reported 4 percent of students were suspended from the school during the school year, down from 9 percent  the year before. Statewide, the number is 14 percent.

According to the high school school handbook's code of conduct, students may face expulsion for direct threats to the safety and security of others at school.

They include making bomb threats, fighting with a dangerous weapon, verbal or physical threats against teachers or others, arson and criminal acts.

It also includes drugs and alcohol possession, intent to sell, drug use, or the possession of drug paraphernalia on school grounds.
