On the Auction Block: 18 King's Highway, Middletown

The very old, very large building is located across from Middletown Township offices.

An old, large building formerly used as a daycare for small children, located across the street from the Town Hall complex, will be put on the auction block on November 16.

The 7,800-square foot building dates back to 1820 and is located at 18 King's Highway.  According to Monmouth County property records, in 2012 the land and buildings were assessed at $1 million and taxes were $21,471. It was recently marketed for $850,000, but did not find a buyer.

It was most recently known as Red Oak Village School. It has also operated as Little Village Day Care Center.

Max Spann Real Estate and Auction Company will conduct the auction, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Double Tree on Frontage Street in Newark.

Two other Monmouth County properties will also be sold "absolute" regardless of price. The Matawan properties are located at 82 and 82 ½ Main Street -- not far from the train station.

Other bank-owned properties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will be auctioned on that day. For more information, visit maxspann.com.

This is a gorgeous, historic property. The issue is that restoring a property isn't cheap, even with the New Jersey Rehabilitation Subcode which addresses older structures. What is the Middletown Historic Preservation Commission' take on this structure? Is it protected in any way?

You are not mistaken Jude, I visited my grandparents there 30 years ago,, they died there. I have 4 kids, I never put them in that "school".. Gave me the creeps when I was 7 and still does to this day.
