Top Local Ponds and Lakes for Free Fishing Weekend June 14-15
Novices are encouraged to pick up a rod and try freshwater fishing in Monmouth County's stocked ponds and lakes.
The annual free fishing weekend is meant to encourage newcomers to try the sport. No license is necessary on these days.
In larger lakes, you might catch muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, striped bass hybrids, channel catfish and lake trout. Smaller streams and brooks can yield brown and rainbow trout. Wild populations of fish (not hatchery raised) can also be found in abundance, says the State Dept. of Environmental Protection.
