Proposed Cell Tower on Red Oak Diner Property Denied

Zoning Board members and officials expressed concern about placing the tower where it could impact so many homes.

A cell tower proposed by Verizon Wireless has been denied by the Hazlet Zoning Board, which denied the variances requested by the applicant.

The applicant requested a variance on the distance between the tower and residential zones as well as property lines. The tower proposal included a 386.4 foot setback from the property line where 500 feet is required, and variances to lower the setback from a residential property from 90 feet to as low as 44 feet.

The request was denied on Aug. 8 and the resolution to deny was set on Sept. 19.

In meeting minutes from May, Zoning Board members and officials expressed concern about the impact of placing the tower where it could impact so many homes.

The applicant considered spots on the Costco lot, Pep Boys, Hazlet Plaza and Kmart but the owners weren't interested in a cell tower on those properties.
