Marlboro Planning Board Approves Rt. 9 Billboards

The board considered the proposals, despite its recent billboard ordinance regarding Rt. 9 and Rt. 79, because they were submitted prior to the new ordinance.

Two billboard proposals that have spent months on the Marlboro Planning Board agenda were approved at the June 6 meeting.

Proposals came from CBS Outdoor Media, for two billboards on Rt. 9. The board considered the proposals, , because they were submitted prior to the new ordinance.

The double-faced billboards will stand on Rt. 9 North near Rt. 520 and on Rt. 9 South near CVS at Texas Road, according to the News Transcript. The boards will be lit, a luxury the developer will take up with Jersey Central Power and Light.

I can't believe they let any billboards in residential communities. Driving on rt 79, and seeing billboards as you pass thru Marlboro is just plan trashy. I half expect to see a sign for a strip club! ...and when I see the "Blush" billboard, I keep thinking it's a strip club!!! ....way to ruin the neighborhood.

Marlboro Mann - You are missing the point. You can. People are going to do what you don't want them to do because they can. It's human nature. The problem arises when the Marlboro Planning Board thinks they can make decisions regarding matters they have no control over. Legal battles create more of a mess because according to the hefty case law on the books, it is a cut and dry issue. Hence, the arrival of billboards in each direction on any highway you can install.

A 1994 Wisconsin DOT study found that: “It is obvious that the variable message sign has had an effect on traffic, most notably in the increase of the side swipe crash rate.” Legal or not, these electronic billboards may pose a safety hazard.

Our municipal government has let us down. It seems if there is a dollar to be made, our elected officials jump at it. But once again you'll never see any of this constructed close to where they live.

There is nothing the Planning Board could have done on Rt. 9 - it is legislation that they HAD to be approved. The Board can only control how far apart they can go, and they changed the legislation to make it a law that they have to be further apart.
