Holmdel's Winterfest Is Cancelled

Too many safety concerns as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Holmdel Township's dream of transforming its picturesque Bayonet Farm into a magical multi-day wintertime festival Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 has been iced.

Township Clerk Maureen Doloughty, a member of the Winterfest planning committee, said there were too many concerns that there could be adequate power at the site, and worries that the ground would be too soft for the 45-foot Ferris Wheel, carousel, and ice-skating rink following Hurricane Sandy.

"I'm so disappointed, you have no idea" she said Wednesday. "We were really looking forward to this."

A 14-foot tree had been obtained and Winterfest commemorative ornaments were designed. Carolers, music bands, craft merchants were scheduled.

Recreation Coordinator Deborah Dow spent the day calling vendors to break the news.

She said the township will turn its attention instead to enhancing the annual tree-lighting celebration, currently scheduled for the evening of Dec. 6.
