Holmdel's David Bauman Nominated for Seat on NJ Supreme Court

Monmouth County Superior Court Judge David Bauman is Gov. Chris Christie's pick for the high court. Also nominated was BPU Chief Robert Hanna.

A Holmdel resident has been nominated by Governor Chris Christie to take a seat on the New Jersey Supreme Court as an Associate Justice.

Judge David Bauman, 56, currently sits as the Presiding Judge, Civil Division, in Monmouth County. If confirmed by the Senate, the governor says Bauman will contribute a wealth of experience earned during a career of law.

Additionally, he would be the first Asian-American to serve on New Jersey’s highest Court.

Also nominated was Robert Hanna of Madison, 54, who is the president of the Board of Public Utilities. In recent years he served as Director of the Division of Law and Assistant Attorney General within the NJ Dept. of Law and Public Safety.

"Not only would Bob and David make outstanding justices, but their nominations also expand the diversity of background, strong experience and qualifications of the Court membership -- a point made most clear by each man's previous, unanimous endorsement by the New Jersey Senate," said Gov. Christie.

Sen. Joseph Kyrillos issued a statement endorsing Bauman. "His experience on the bench, in private practice, and in service to our nation in the Marine Corps is impressive. As one of my constituents, I supported David’s nomination to the Superior Court and helped usher him through the confirmation process. I am proud to support David once again, and proud that Monmouth has put forward someone of his stature for consideration on the Supreme Court."

Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Judge Bauman served for 17 years in private sector law with the firm Bressler, Amery & Ross, including as a partner for 10 years, where he specialized in complex civil and commercial litigation as well as criminal law.

In that capacity, Bauman appeared before the U.S District Court of New Jersey, New York and New Jersey State Courts and various administrative agencies.

In addition, Judge Bauman was an active member of a variety of organizations in the law and victim advocacy communities, including: the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee; the Asian-Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey; the New Jersey Battered Women’s Legal Advocacy Project; and as a member of the NJ State Bar Association’s Franchise Law Committee and Special Committee on Military Law and Veterans Affairs.

Judge Bauman is a Magna cum laude graduate of Columbia University and received his law degree from Boston College.
