When do we address the 600 lb gorilla in our living room, ie, the schools budget? Also, when do we address the 200 lb other gorilla, ie, the county budget? Together, they are 80% of the our property taxes. I will never accept the fact that we cannot lower these two monsters. My Holmdel tax bill has increased 20% in the past 4 years. We can only fire so many municipal employees and police.

Bud I agree with you. People keep focusing their attention on the municipal budget which accounts for just 15% of our tax dollar and fail to really go after the schools....myself included. It's a shame.
Although I am a Democrat (but locally vote for the best candidate), I feel the current township committee has done a credible job with running our town.

Bud, my gregarious neighbor - As of late, the school board has done a pretty good job of contolling costs. This year the increase is just above 1% and the previous year it was was 0%. Given the large number of employees (teachers etc...), this is commendable. I am reasonably certain the cost of their benefits increased in the double digits but that increase was not passed on. Historically, this may not have been the case, but for the last few year they have been pretty conscientous.

Keep in mind that the excellent school system accounts for a large percentage of the reason that Holmdel proprty values are relatively higher than other areas. Great schools generally reflect on the community and indicates a good place to raise a family....which brings in valued new Holmdel residents.

Glad somebody agrees with me! Due to several factors, ie, private schools, lousy real estate market, etc., our school population is actually decreasing, but not the costs to run the place. If we could reduce the total school costs by 2% per year, we could begin to reduce property taxes. I know we can do it. Look at Barb Duncan, she just took a cut in pay to set an example for the rest of the administrators.

Suzanne, a 1% increase of a number that is already too high is no accomplishment, we should be looking for ways to decrease an unacceptable figure, not be merely content to hold the line..
