Game On! for Holmdel Tennis Center

Township officials aiming to bring life back to the abandoned courts once again.

It's been some time since the old clay courts next to the Holmdel Swim Club have seen some action.

But that may change now that the township has heard from a tennis academy with a vision for the site.

According to Township Administrator Andy Katz, representatives of a tennis training center have proposed refurbishing the courts in exchange for using the facility for an 8-10 week period each year, for two years. They are proposing daytime, outdoor use.

"On the face of it, its a barter exchange," Katz said at the March 1 government meeting. "It's a worthwhile idea to consider. Even if it doesn't work out, we get the courts fixed -- which is no small expense."

The Township Committee introduced legislation authorizing the Township Administrator to prepare a formal lease bid for the Holmdel Tennis Center, described as "a portion of real estate known at Lot 79, Block 46." It was unanimously passed by all five members.

The final passage and a public hearing will be held at the March 22 meeting.

Once approved, the township will advertise the opportunity to all interested parties through public notices.
