Christie Suspends Parkway Tolls

Governor adds incentive to spur voluntary evacuation of Jersey Shore.

Gov. Chris Christie repeated a call for people to voluntarily evacuate the Jersey Shore area ahead of Hurricane Irene and suspended toll collection on the Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway.

Christie in a statement Thursday night said toll collection on the Parkway would be temporarily suspended south of the Raritan River and on the Atlantic City Expressway beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, according to a statement.

Christie called on people already at the shore to begin to leave immediately and advised anyone who has shore rentals or was planning to go to the shore this weekend not to go, according to the release.
