Oct. 10 Vote in Hazlet On Whether to Buy New SUV for Bureau of Fire Prevention

Should the Hazlet Bureau of Fire Prevention get a new vehicle, which could cost as much as $40,000? Voters in Hazlet are being asked to vote on the matter at a special election on Wednesday, Oct. 10. 

According to Tito Acevedo, the chariman of Fire Commissioners of Fire District No. 1, Fire Marshal John Beslanovitz's Dodge Durango is several years old and going on more than 160,000 miles. He needs a new one, to be purchased through state contract, in order to do his job making inspections for certificates of occupancy, providing fire prevention education and responding to fire emergencies. 

"Town mechanics deemed the repair costs on the vehicle he's got 'not worth fixing,'" he said. "It's burning oil." 

The vote will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 1766 Union Avenue, Hazlet.

Such elections rarely attract much participation. On July 11, a vote was held to authorize the purchase of three new command vehicles for the township's three new companies, which could cost as much as $150,000. The voters approved it 25-1.
